Any techniques for jumping in windy conditions? I rode yesterday and a front came through and the wind started gusting pretty hard. I had several close calls especially on the bigger jumps but even on the smaller jumps when I would catch a gust. I was trying to keep the bike low but my front tire would always seem to be pushed out by the wind more so than the back making me feel like I'm low siding in the air.
Thanks

I think the best advice is to roll the jump if it is windy. It it is more predictable straight into or with the wind at your back but is still risky. I have seen many guys loaded up in the meat wagon due to crashes caused by jumping in strong winds. Roll the jumpsin high winds!

For me, a crosswind seems to blow the bottom of the bike out from underneath me.

If I know I'm jumping with a crosswind, I try to turn into it a little just before takeoff. That doesn't really make any sense to me because it implies that I'm leaning the bike in a direction I already know it's going to go (badly) when the wind hits me, but it seems to work. I hesitate to even mention it, because it doesn't seem to make sense, but it seems to work for me.

One thing I do know that helps is to grip the bike with your legs/knees on takeoff and all the while in the air. That seems to ensure that you and the bike move as a single mass rather than two separate objects merely flying in close proximity. :)

Windy

conditions are very tuff to predict. Gomer correct in the angle aspect of windy conditions and jumping. Advise to roll the jumps will also be good thought, be careful in that instance that you don't roll a jump in front of a crazed C rider doing a nac nac!

For your own safety, just roll it so you can ride another day.

I say go for it! If the wind is blowing from left to right, takeoff on the left side
of the jump. You will land on the right side of the jump and not in the hay bales. Keep the bike upright and pointing straight and just flow with the wind.
Just don't ride in a tornado!

i rode in somewhat windy conditions today, and i really noticed a difference. When I was accelerating, i would hear the wind pick up and feel the bike slow down at thesame time. I never thought that wind would be that big a factor...

the last time i jumped in the wind, i almost fell ovwer backwards. i was in 5th pinned and came up to the jump. as soon as i hit the jump, the wind hit me like a wall. it hit me head-on and instantly my front end went strait up!! i was lucky it was a small jump, maybe 5-6 feet, so i landed in an almost strait-up-and-down 90 degree wheely and leaned as far forward as i could. the jump lasted like 2 seconds, so i barely had time to think about the back brake. that was one wild ride and ill be watching the weather channel for "windy conditions" from now on.
