My son's Yamaha PW50 won't kick start. The kicker moves freely. It worked last year. I recall a slight play in it before it would grab when kicking. This year I got it out and you can move the kicker by hand without it grabbing. It seems the oil in the transmision is way low or out. Would this prevent it from grabbing? Any ideas?

Inside the side case on that side is the kick start mecanism. There is a spring and a catch lever that catches the kick statr shaft when opushing it down. Then it returns freely. That catch lever is probably broken or the screws came loose. The oil will not make a difference in starting but will make a big difference in the motor running properly. Good luck
