Between the TT-R125, DMZ 125, and the KLX 125 which is a better bike in the long run? I am 5'5, 140lb. and I plan on riding trails and this is my first bike. I need a powerful, sort-of light weight bike.
I don't have a lot of dirt riding experience, but I road-race. So maybe my perspective is a bit different.
I was bored to death on the TTR-125 within about half an hour. The suspension wasn't up to snuff for me (165 lbs), and I was constantly bouncing off the rev limiter.
Your going to get bored with one of those bikes you mentioned.
A 2-stroke even an 80cc, will smoke any TTR, and you will never get left behind with a bike that fast. My best friend has a KX-100 and he uses it strictly for trail riding, and never uses it at the track and does fine.
I suggest looking at a KDX 200/220. 2-stroke trail bikes as well.
85's retail for around $3,000. Some a little over, some a little under. The KX-100 new retails for $3,250.
But you can look for some leftover models and save tons of money. I bought my brand new leftover 2003 KX-125 for only 3,800$ in total. My friend bought a brand new 2003 YZ-125 for almost 6,000$ in total! Both bike retial at $5,000 but with tax, shipping, prep, all the BS they get you on, your looking at a lot more money. My bike was 3200, and came out to 3800. What a deal.
The RM-100's sold like crap from what I hear (and from that there is no 04 model, only kx-100s) My friend was looking at this 03 RM-100 around here for only $2,700. But he got a better deal on a combo of a KX-100 and KX-65 so they got that. But anyway, look around, there are all sorts of great deals out there.
Even used, such as a KDX 200 would be nice and you can get a nice one in that price range.
I own a 2004 DRZ125 which I just purchased about a month ago... Back in the mid-80s, between the ages of 10 and 13 I rode a `84 CR60 and eventually moved up to a `86 CR80. In 1993 I purchased a `89 Honda Hawk GT 650 Hawk, which I sold a year later.
When I decided to get back into riding dirt bikes (at nearly 30 yrs old), I went with the DRZ for a) cost b) size c) fun factor. I'm only 5'5" and about 145lbs. I can easily sit on the bike and feel confident riding it. It's a tad slow (relatively speaking), but I intend on pepping it up with some BBR mods shortly. I figure after I add an aftermarket carb, stiffer springs, pipe, 150cc big bore kit, Powroll cam and remove the airbox snorkel, I should be having mucho fun out on the trails (not like I do at the moment anyway!).
For myself, it's a lot of bang for the buck... and since I haven't ridden in about 10 years, it's a confidence booster until I decide to get something larger / faster. And if I do decide that riding a dirt bike isn't for me (fat chance), I didn't waste much money. I think they're great starter bikes for someone like myself. God knows I'd probably kill myself on a 125 2-smoke.
