I've done a search on this topic with limited success, so...

I currently own a '98 KDX 220 with the usual mods (pipe, reeds, Fredette susp. mods, etc...). I really like this bike, but my riding buddies are on CR 500's and YZ 426's. I feel like I'm hammering my poor little KDX too much just trying to keep up, hence the decision to go with a KTM 300. I'm sure I'll get along just fine with the 300's powerband, so that decision is made. I ride mostly desert single track with occasional trips to the mx track and a couple of grand prix's.

I've found a clean '99 300 EXC, my question is, other than the forks (50mm conventional vs. 43mm inverted), are there a lot of differences between the '99 and '00-'01 300's? Shock, frame motor, clutch, weight, anything?

Your opinions on the '99 are welcome as well. Thanks guys.

I really like the 50mm WP forks. The '99 is my favorite 300. I am hoping KTM goes to the 48mm WP next year. Engine-wise they are all the same, except very minor changes ('01 - # 6.5 Slide in carb). I do believe there have been some shock changes (very slight) on the recent model, but nothing earth shattering.

If the bike is priced right, you can't go wrong!

I was asking the same questions last year. I've found that virtualy every part from '99 to '02 is the same. The forks and the radiator shrouds are different but that's about all I've found. I ended up getting a clean '99 300EXC for a good price and could not be happier. Just raced my first desert Hare and Hound Jan 27th. The bike worked very well even in the open class.

I had a 99 250EXC and it was a great bike. VERY reliable and the suspension was pretty good, too. '00 was the first year for the 43mm fork and it had some teething problems. The suspension on my 01 400EXC is better than my 99's was but the 99 was still very good.

I bought a 2000 300EXC to replace my 97 300EXC just a couple days ago! I had a very similar question to yours. I can get the link to post here (dunno what I am doing wrong!) so look back a couple days in this forum for a post subject of: Considering a 2000 300exc to replace my 97. a couple of responses that might be of interest for you.

I concluded that worst case...I drop $300 into a Revalve by Alan Randt and live happily ever after. Now...If this stinkin snow would melt I could go enjoy my new toy!
