I have a 95 KTM LC4 with what appears to be a bent shift fork. This is the fork that engages first gear. I'm trying to figure out how a shift fork can get bent. Any one have a good theory as to how a shift for can get bent?

Yes. Attach it to a dirt bike. A large knock may do it in a crash.

But I suspect an alternative is the gear itself is damaged. This is most likely on 1-2 gearchange as it is the most violent. As the gears are meshed together they can round the edges off the dogs making it slip out of gear.

Or if the symptom is hard to engage then fork or drum damage is more likely. Then comes a whole host of less likely scenarios. Sadly a strip is on the cards. As you go to pull it apart do check things like the lever isn’t bent against the frame as the 1-2 throw can be longer.

my personal favorite is using the shifter as a footpeg when landing from a jump
