Kx100 power valve issues

My grandson and I just rebuilt the top end of his 2007 kx100, we both are learning, everything went great until I tried to connect tbe power valve up. When I line the marks up the shaft has very little movement and the linkage from the valve won't reach. The picture included is as close as I can get them. I have tried everthing that I know. Any help will be much appreciated.

Have you tried getting a spanner on the spring and moving it across?
