I'm looking for a new bike to use for woods riding. I am considering converting a MX bike if I can get a cheap one. I have seen new KX250's as far back as 01 for sale.

I rode an 03 and thought it had a great woods motor. It was slow for a 250 but smooth with decent low end. Had all the power I would need in the tight woods. I really don't want more power then I need.

How do the motors and suspension of the 01-04 all compare? I have seen decent deals on the 05 but have heard mixed reviews about how good the motor is for woods.

I have a 2001 KX 250 and I love it! I did lower the gearing [54 tooth rear sprocket] since the tranny is very close ratio. The 2002 has a much better trans gearing [wider] than the 2001 for woods riding.

I believe the engine in the 03 is the same generation/design as the 02 (and earlier) but with the requisite mods.

The 03 got 48mm forks and lost the HSCD adjuster on the shock.

Obviously, the chassis is completely different for 03.
