Hey, I sent my cylinder and lower end to eric gorr, (cylinder for the 520ama) and I was wondering what type of pipe I should use. I put down to port it from mid-top and pump 93 fuel.

Which pipe would you guys suggest for it? I knocked out the gnarly from FMF, cause that is a all low-end pipe. I'm unsure about Pro-circut. They make the platnum, works, and the platnum dune pipe. FMF I guess only has the Fatty besides the gnarly. Which pipe do you guys think would boost the top-end? Eric, what would you suggest for this build? I am mainly just looking for top-end. I would call, but I don't want to bug you.. Thanks. Also, jetting, should I change it for the bigbore? I'm getting excited about getting it running. :-)

Thanks

From what I remember PC and FMF both make topend pipes for the big KX.Unless they've discontinued them.If so check out denniskirk.com or some other major accessory shop.

I tried an FMF Fatty, it gave the bike more midrange thrust but didn't pull as nice up top. I've read that the Pro Circuit pipe is "mellow" but I imagine if top end power is what you want, the Pro Circuit Desert pipe would be the ticket.

You might want to check out Zip-Ty's package with the lowboy pipe. Not sure how it compares to stock, but it's another alternative.

Cam's correct. We've had several KX's and the FMF produced a large surge in the power, not what we were looking for. The PC pipe smoothed it out and is very usable. PC also offered (don't know if it's still available) what they termed a "Desert Pipe". It muted the bottom somewhat and let it run on out on top. This sounds like what you're looking for.
Ours was stock and we had 15/42 (I believe, it's been a while) gearing and never could find top speed. Not enough room here in the southeast!

I forgot to mention it, but FWIW, the stock pipe seems like a very good all around choice. I ended up switching back to it after using the FMF for awhile. The FMF Fatty is a bit more 'fun', but only for the first half of a 20 minute moto.

i though htat there was a thread about PC pipes on kx500s and that they made it less powerful. i think a couple people went back to stock after trying the PC pipe. unless u want the bike to be easier to manage then the PC would be good, but since ur getting it bored out even more i doubt u want it mellower. i might be wrong about the pro circuit pipes and the kx 500's but if u can find the thread it will tell u alot.

I've searched the archives several times and have yet to find an objective critique of KX500 pipes. Some folks say that aftermarket pipes intentionally make less power but a flatter, more rideable torque curve and some say it makes more power.

Quite frankly, unless you have a dyno sheet on back to back tests, it's really hard to tell. The seat of the pants is the world's worst dyno. Mine has an FMF Burly pipe on it and an 11 oz flywheel weight. It came that way. I hope to get a stock pipe someday and see how if feels 'stock', though.

Pro Circuit still does make the Desert Pipe for the big KX500. That's a great choice for mid to top gains. But, if you want to pay a little more money get a Dynoport. They make a MID-TOP pipe for it also. I'm sure theirs is better quality. But, I could be wrong because I love the craftmanship on my Pro Circuit Platinum pipe for my '01 KDX200. It really gives it more mid-top.

I haven't seen a dyno-port ad for quite a while, but last time I checked, they made trick hand-made cone pipes, like the stuff that used to litter the factory bikes 5 years ago. Cool stuff!

They seem to have taken a lower profile in the 2-wheeled dirt world. They still offer their cone (works) pipes but they are quite a bit more than their other pipes. The works pipe for the KX500 will set you back 4 big ones. Check them out at http://www.dynoport.com/.
