Can someone give me some advise on keeping my left foot on the peg. I have developed a bad habit of taking it off alot. I don't touch the ground with it always, I just hang it there. I used to take the right one off alot too but have been able to keep it on ok lately.

I know that if I stand up I keep it on, but I have trouble standing in the liitle bermed corners you find in the woods so often.

When I'm on a track I put my feet down on every corner but in the woods weaving in and out of trees I don't really attack the corners like I do on the track. Instead I find a good cruise gear for the area, usually 2nd or 3rd and I slide as far forward as possible on the seat and make sure the balls of my feet are on the pegs. From this position I can work the bike under me. Out of the curves I stand (just a little) if there are stutter bumps or roots coming out coming out of the corners. Then sit back down for the next corner.

Yeah, concentration is the key. You are trying to form a new habit. Problem is you are trying to replace a previously developed bad habit.

Try this:

Practice DOING the thing you are trying to avoid ON PURPOSE. In other words, put yourself back into concsious control of the mental mechanism
that causes you to do it subconsiously. Do it on purpose while concentrating on what you are doing and regain consious control of it. Go through the
motions just as if it is what you are intending to do. After a short while, you will find that you can control it (and not do it).

YOU NEED PRACTICE

Go somewhere, by yourself, or just with someone else, who wants to "dink" aroung, and just concentrate on it. go slow enough, that you can concentrate on your leg, and pretty soon, you will have changed it.

I'm guessing here, but I imagine you're sitting down when you do this. Try standing up more and you will force yourself to keep your feet on the pegs more.

You are right Gomer, and I am trying to stand more. Tight woods make me want to sit though. boy there are just too many things to work on.

nobody said using the correct technique would be easy. Like the others have said, conciously make the effort to keep your foot on the peg. set up a practice area, and practice. Once you have done it heaps and heaps of times, go home and let your brain sort out the infromation. Next ride, forget about it and let your cerebellum take control. The informatiion is there, so let your subconcious take command. This is what seperates a pro from an new comer. Subconcious control. It has to be, because there is too many things to concentrate at once. Body positioning, elbows up, door knob technique on the throttle, extend your inside leg, weight the outside peg, so on and so on. Can you really concentrate on all these areas at once? of course not, so we practice each one conciously until they are habbit, then we take out the concious thought and let our subconcious control the show.
The human brain is the most complex machine on earth. We still don't know how information is processed and stored, and the complextivity of having 1 neurone joined to 10,000 other neurones is amazing. You are capable of much. much more than you think, and most of us are not using out most powerful instrument to its potential. Get out there and practice!

Umm...you've never actually had a conversation with PatMan, have you? I'm pretty sure his is ranked somewhere between a flat-head screwdriver and a staple remover. :scream:

Seriously, Boozer, thanks for the well thought out explanations.

Cure for keeping left foot on peg
Find rock 8"in diameter
Ride past on right side 35 mph
drag left foot into rock ripping body off bike
let heal 3 weeks, PROBLEM CURED
This may sound intense, but it worked for me !!!!!!
