Travel Plan Proposal

Round one of the Colville National Forest Travel Plan process left out the east half of Ferry County. This area of Ferry County contains an abundance of old access roads and trails. These roads have provided motorized activities for the purpose of commerce, recreation and public access for over one hundred years. The roads and trails currently provide motorized access to grazing allotments, quick access for fire protection, rapid response for search and rescue and recreation for the local citizens of Ferry County and visitors to our area. These pathways allow for more than just motorized recreation. The roads and trails allow for hunting, berry and mushroom gathering, wood cutting, wildlife & bird watching, and other activities. Motorized roads and trails are not limited to motorized use but allow hikers, equestrian and bicycles to use the same trails and roads.

Ferry County is looking to the future and has identified back country recreation as an important element of the County’s transition from total timber dependent economy to a more diversified economy. Ferry County has recognized the rapid growth in the Off- Highway Vehicle sales and the current disparity between non-motorized and motorized designated trails. The motorized access to the public lands is paramount to Ferry County for public safety and economics, to that end we submit the following trails to be added to the 2007 travel plan.

The proposed OHV access has been selected based on the best information available from the county road log, historic maps of the Colville National Forest, the 2001 Forest Service vicinity map for the Colville National Forest, the 2006 Map Metrics Road Atlas of Ferry County, Google Earth website, motorized recreation associations and the local citizens. The pathways are primarily based on existing roads or trails that are in current use. Most of the trails are customarily used by the citizens of the area and many guests of our area. Some routes are in fact old state routes, private property accesses, mining claim access and logging roads. These roads have been selected to provide emergency access for search and rescue, scenic vistas, back county experiences and hunting. The routes have diverse levels of skill from the novice to the experienced. The proposal allows for the development of private parks and commercial enterprises to aid the economics of the area. These pathways are designed to compliment the Okanogan, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties’ plans for inter-county OHV travel.
