Hello. I am a newbie.

Are there some folks that don't mind taking [frequent] breaks to wait for the new guy to catch up?

So far, I've only ridden on trails...no motocross tracks. I've been out 15-20 times, mostly at Muenster.

Takers? Recommendations?

Thanks!

Welcome to the site the_monk. I'm sure one of the North Texas Smack Talkers will be along shortly. Hopefully you can find someone to ride with. Good luck with the search, YZ165

Oh boy, you've come to the right place. There is somebody posting about a ride or race around this forum just about every week. If you're interested in trying your hand at some racing, check out www.race-toro.org . There are several of us on here that race that series. If you want to ride during the week, get ahold of JMD and Enduro Nut, they're both self-employeed and ride at Muenster frequently during the week. Stan and his dad go to Muenster fairly often also, on the weekends mostly I believe. I know somebody on here mentioned going to Gilmer several times (it was the guy who's from Paris I think, you're sn is slippin my mind). I suppose all you really need to do is figure out when you want to go ride, then check this forum to see if somebody else already had the same idea and hook up with them, or post to let people know you're going... more often than not you'll find someone who's willing.

Just keep checking this forum when you want to ride. Someone is going somewhere almost every weekend. I have been back on a bike just over a good year now and mostly trail riding. Riding with some of these young bucks will make you feel older than you want to admit. They will get you in shape quick or wear you down. I have not met a rotten apple in the bunch yet. Some of them are very entertaining and will keep you laughing. Just don't fall of you bike in the process. They are all good folks and look out for each other. You need to plan a Kiamanchi trip trip with this bunch and eat Indian tacos.

Hello. I am a newbie.

Welcome to the site

I don't know how you wandered all the way though the living room and den all the way to our little corner of the garage, but Welcome!

As everyone said, watch the forum. There are many opportunities and Muenster is one of the places that gets action. As a matter of fact, there is a group at Muesnter almost every weekend and many weekdays.

Kiamichi and Lake MacKenzie are two other places that get mention. Both are about 4 hours or so, but great for an overnight trip. We haven't been to MacKinzie since last fall. Kiamichi has a great ride report in the << All Ride/Race Reports >> forum, check it out.

Be sure and go to your User CP and update information relating to your location, type of riding, etc. After that grab a spot on the couch and tell us a bit about yourself. How long you have been riding, what kind of riding you prefer, where you are located, etc. We will do our best to hook you up with some fellow dirt bike enthusiasts.

Again, welcome to the site, and shout if you have any questions!

Monk, welcome to the group. It's a nice bunch of guys, except for Tony, whom nobody seems to get along with. LOL. Just kidding; Tony's one of the friendliest guys you'll ever meet. Now, Monk, It's kind of a tradition around here for the new guy to buy doughnuts for anybody who rides a KTM 400. I don't really know how that got started, but take my word for it; it's definitely a tradition--or would be, if the rest of these tightwads would do the right thing.

Wow! Thanks for all of the response!

A little bit about me. I've ridden sport bikes off and on for about 7 years (around 100k miles). I road raced (mid pack) for a couple of seasons. I bought a '91 KTM300EXC last year, and really struggled with it. Big, heavy, too powerful, etc. So I sold it and got a used KX250 recently.

I've been out to Muenster a few times (through Bill's woods ~4 times), to Rocky a few times, and to Rip Char once. I've probably been riding between 15 and 20 times.

So far, I prefer trail riding. I've never ridden on a motocross track, and I'm afraid to get too far off the ground.

I guess what I'm looking for is some folks that don't mind waiting around for me to catch up, and occasionally helping me get over/around some of the hairier stuff.

The last part is a lot of my job involves travel, and I have to leave on Sundays quite frequently. So, I'm especially interested in folks that ride on Saturdays, and quite possibly on Fridays.

By the way, I live in Keller… North of Fort Worth.

Thanks for the very warm welcome! And I'm not bringing donuts for anybody that roosts me.

So the main question: is anybody riding this weekend? Where, when, what do I look for?

Are you bringing donuts? Where is the donut line? If you bought a Yamaha you would not have to buy donuts.

:nener:

You guys have fun. I am working every weekend this month unless I get creative on a way to escape. I might show for the Toro Race. I am scheming on an escape plan this very minute. :clue:

Like everyone else has said;welcome. We're always glad to ride with new people. I am at Muenster nearly every weekend, and so are several others around here.

I would try to avoid this JMD character, however. He's a good rider and all, but rather on the ugly side. Most times he won't even ride a motorcycle, but one of those bicycles with the big front wheel and little rear wheel. Are those things wierd or what? And get this; all the while, he will be wearing his pink bunny slippers. He claims these things make him look sophistocated, I actually think it is a little silly. A tightwad to boot; he'll hardly ever share his doughnuts. All too often will he take your doughnuts when you're not looking, and not the cheap ones either, it's always the expensive cream filled ones he goes for. But don't take my word for it, just ask around. Many people refer to him as a scum-sucking bottom dweller.

That being said, we plan on riding together this weekend. Maybe he's not that bad after all.

No riding for me this weekend. I have to wrap up some posters for a convention next week and the plans for a church I am working on.

I am looking forward to riding at the ranch on 20th/21st. We have to cut the trails in the morning, but virgin trails are worth it! :nener:

Monk, there is a thread on a ride in Jan/Feb in the Sam Houston National Forest north of Houston. You need to put it on your dance card.

Regarding folks to watch for ... be wary of tarpaper if he shows up.

Stanley is a great guy, but he often brings his "Old Man" along. Don't let "dad" park his 525 by your truck. He has been known to dig a trench with his rear tire rather than put his kick stand down.

JMD is a suck up like me. We like anyone that will bring donuts. :yeehaw:

I still think that dirt was already on that nasty truck of yours. Are you SURE it came from my rear tire?

And who are you calling old? Pops :moon:

BTW, Monk, there is an Enduro this coming Sunday @ Muenster, so unless you plan on riding it, you might want to hold off on going there.

I was on the fence for a while wheather to ride it or not, have finally decided not.

Sunday, Meunster, 8:00 AM start time. Don't know if you're available this weekend.
I'm planning on riding a late row, as always. I may be the only Hearland Spode making it.
My KTM started life as a 400..... I like Krispy Kreeme (?) doughnuts.

Grady, Brian, Jeff, Tony, etc.: I may be ugly, but ... um ... well, OK, I'm ugly. That's all. Anyway, Grady, about this weekend. The thing is, I promised a newbie friend I'd go with him for half a day Saturday. That would leave the rest of the day Saturday and all of Sunday, if you guys wanted to hit the Kiamichi. I know that Jared, a good guide, will be there Saturday; maybe not Sunday. But I have a GPS and we can find our way around. Besides, I'll have Scotty with me, so we might not want to do the most extreme trails out there, though he can ride pretty well now. On the other hand, if my newbie friend begs off this weekend, we could go early Saturday, maybe come home Saturday night, or stay the night, I don't know. I'll know more tonight, and I'll call you. Monk, you might like the Kiamichi Mountain area, if you like lots of rocks. Nothing extremely technical except the stream crossings sometimes, and we can help you get across, but the trails are rocky, and there aren't lots of places to rest. Let's discuss this tomorrow, and I'll have a better idea of what's happening.

Is there anything comparable to Kiamichi compares at Muenster? Would it be a mountainous version of Bill's woods?

I travel alot, so most of the time overnighters are out of the question. Too much time away from home and all.

I'll continue to watch this thread for late breaking information.

Kiamichi is a 4+ hour drive each way. It is a long way to go for a day on the trails.

As JMD said ... think rocks on rocks.

It rained 2 inches the night before we rode there this spring and we didn't get any mud on our bikes. There was only one hill that was muddy. For the most part is was ...

round rocks on
flat rocks on
half buried rocks on
mostly buried rocks on
totally buried rocks
which were all covered with loose rocks :yikes:

Still had fun though. Watching Harley extract his bike from a stream was a hoot.

After he got it out, it went something like this.

Kick Kick .. Pant Pant Pant
repeat the above about 20 time and then Keith took over for a while.

It finally started, just when we were about to totally give up on it.

Monk, it's not as technical as Muenster. Nothing like Bill's Woods. If you've ridden there, you'll be fine. Just lots of rocky trails, some less rocky than others. There are some fun trails with erosion bars that act like jumps. Looks like Grady and Brian are going up tomorrow night; I'll be there sometime Saturday. There will be a group of guys I have ridden with once or twice up there, too. Look for Jared on an XR400. It's not a 4-hour drive for me, in McKinney. More like 3. Directions:

Take 75 north, just past Atoka, Okla., to Stringtown.

At Stringtown, take 43 east to Sardis Lake, all the way to the big dam; you can't miss it.

At the dam, you'll be at a tee, which is Highway 2; go left on 2.

Go about 7 miles (don't hold me to this, but it's not 10) past Yanush to Highway 1, and go right, or east again.

Highway 1 will take you right into Talihina, Oklahoma, a nice little town with some good restaurants and nice folks.

Anyway, right in town, go left on 271; it's the main light right downtown.

271 will take you about 15 miles right up to the Talimena State Park, on your right.

You'll pass a couple of other Forest Service signs, but you can't miss the Talimena sign on your right. It's a big carved and painted wooden sign, looks nice.

Call me with any questions. (214) 437-9187.
