I'm considering dismantling my RM 250 engine ('82) to replace the engine cases (cracked at swing arm boss) with the ones I bought off of Fleabay. I'm a decent mechanic, I'm putting together a 360 for my old Ford right now and I've rebuilt carbs. and such over the years so I'm no slouch to say the least. My question is: Do you think it's possible for a decent mech. like myself to take this thing apart and put it back together without a manual? I have a knack for remembering how things came apart and pay great attention to what I'm doing. What think ye? I've heard it's really not hard at all. If you've never taken one apart save your advice please. ;)

Parts change, doable with out the book. A mechanic would need the book though, and go through the trans and bottom end, for out of spec/normal replacement parts. Or at least I would like to believe. Looking at parts does not always tell the entire story. There are parts in there that if they look shiny and good, they are not, and are worn out. The online parts micro fiches have accurate parts diagrams, no specs though. The 100 dollar question, why did the case break in the first place? Used cases with new bearings and seals? Comparing that old dirt bike engine to your ford is a little off. Pathetically it would be closer to an older F1 race car. And I did not make them like that, but I do hate pushing them back or getting hurt! Vintage Bob

Pushing? Getting hurt? Not good! Manual, $35. Hmm, I think I'll get the manual. Thanks for the perspective.

Yes, buy the manual. You'll be glad you did.
