what mods can i do to make my 1988 xr250 lighter? Also what is the best pipe for it? a pro circuit t4 or a fmf megamax 2? how loud are they? is there anything else i can do to make the bike better?
IMO, the older XR250 needs suspension help much more than it needs a loud muffler or major engine mods.
I had a '90 model with a big bore piston (277cc, I think) and that added some low end power, but it's hard to turn an XR250 into a powerhouse without spending big $ and probably compromising reliability.
Probably the best thing you could do with this bike is to add the cartridge fork emulators from race-tech to your forks and have your rear shock revalved for less hi speed compression dampening. Add a larger diameter downturn tip to your existing muffler exit and re jet the carburetor for slightly richer on the pilot jet. Ride and have fun!!
Any more real performance gains for an xr250 are going to come at a large cost. Consider a klx300 if you want more performance in a small bore 4-stroke trail bike.
