There are two thin metal rings in the clutch. One is flat and the other is angled, I assume to be some sort of spring tension to make the clutch action smoother.
But I don't see in my manual or on buykawasaki.com which one goes on the outside clutch hub first, and which way the angled one faces (widest side inward or outward).
clue me in please

flat ring against the inner hub.
taper ring next to that with thinnest part touching the flat one. so wide part touches first clutch pad.
I got it written in my manual to help me out.

While your clutch is apart, you could check the race that goes around the clutch shaft. My bike was making more noise and once I changed it, it got noticeably better.

Some riders just leave 'em out.

Maybe 'cuz they din't remember which way they went back in?

I've never been clear on the 'why' of the 'leave 'em' out point of view.

This may be the same group that has parts left over every time they dis/reassemble something? ;)
