Modern 2 strokes vs Classics?

Hey guys, I have a 1989 CR 250 and I was looking to get a newer 250 2T, but I'm not sure if the power delivery is substantially different. My 250 has a SNAP to the power, but what does a modern 2 stroke ride like? Is the powerband more "violent" or is it a smoother ride? Just wondering guys and gals :)

All bikes are different. The same model can be much smoother or harder hitting from year to year. Generally they'll be similar to your 89CR. The chassis is where the biggest improvements have been made on more modern bikes.

Yea they keep getting lighter and lighter. Well i think the best thing is to just ride one huh?

The '89 - '90 CR 250's had a pretty hard hit. The '90 especially was hard to control the power because of the violent powerband. In the years following the 1990, Honda reduced the hit to make the bikes more controllable.

Oh that's perfect then because yah the bike does hit hard!! I think im going to enjoy riding a newer 2T 250 much more! Thank you!

Ergo's will be the biggest difference. Then suspension/chassis. Finally motor. If you enjoy riding deep in the saddle like so many of the bikes from that era forced you to, then you should keep it. The seats got flatter and more centralized on the newer bikes to allow for easier transitions from front/rear. Once you get used to it, you'll wonder how you could ever ride in the position that those 80's bikes forced you to be in.

I think there are definite reasons to upgrade from a 89 CR, but it really boils down to what you like. If you are happy, I wouldn't change a thing. IMO, just wanting something that is faster or hits harder isn't a good enough reason. You can make that 89 scream.

If you're a good rider you can ride anything good. To me there is a cool factor when you see a guy riding an old well maintained bike that is a better rider than the guys on newer bikes.

i have a 88 cr250 there is no way i will ever sell this bike for a newer one.the only thing the newer cr250 have that is better is the AF.Just do some little mods to it i have some tricks pm if your interested.

They changed the tranny to widen out the gears i believe in 93. so that and each year got more power. The 00-01 is regarded as the best out of the box with the 05-07s have some serious potential. Everything is good but the motor. They do produce the most HP in the dyno, but the delivery is not great. A pro motor for sure after RC

Even before i polished the cylinder my bike was plenty powerful and just did that has a simple project that i always wanted to do.But no i actually wouldn't recommend it.Thanks for your concern joe!

like newer bikes are smooth as hell with insane power if you get em right, get a yz 250 2000 and up, i got one for a grand, best bike i have rode in my life and they are pretty reliable. i could beat anything with it

I thought for sure my bike was going to beat my friend's
10' CRF 450 w/programmer on my modded 01' rm 250...
From a roll on he jumps out a few bike lengths, but then I catch up for top speed because the way I'm geared 13/47T. I think if I had a 13/48T it would be dead even, but then he might get me for top end ( I wouldn't want to hold it wide open too long).
