I have been trial riding a Suzuki RMX 250 for awhile and plan to ride a few enduros in the southeast this year. Frankly, I have always had a problem with the torque available on the RMX. Clearly, I understand the bike has motorcross roots. However, any thoughts on how to get it to act a little better on slow, uphill situations? I would gladly give up some top speed for a little more grunt down low.

low-end

you might try gearing the bike down a tooth or two on the rear sprocket especially if your not usuing stock gearing. othe mods you might want to look into would be a pipe aimed at low end power and tourque reeds...before you do anything make sure your top-end is fresh and the bike is in good running order.

If you change the rear sprocket you would want to go a tooth or 2 larger.

I don't understand why your RMX doesn't have enough torque as it is. If the engine is in good shape, is jetted properly, and doesn't have some after market accesory that has killed the torque then it should pull like a 4-stroke.

I had one of those and they were good bikes IMO.

I agree with kawierider. The first thing I would try is getting a larger rear sprocket. Make sure that no on e put an RM base gasket on it instead of the RMX gasket. The thinner RM gasket gives it higher compression and makes it run even more like an RM instead of a woods bike. I had a 95 RMX when I first started riding again and it is a little too touchy for me in the woods. I have a 200exc now and it is just right in the woods.

Add a divider plate in the carb

send it off to RB designs and get the divider plate installed, it will work like magic on the bottom and have more snap in the throttle response.

1) OEM '89 RM (yes, RM) 250 head gasket ($12) or Cometic Hi-Perf. RMX top end gasket kit, White Bros. Part #95-7735 ($32, '93-up, http://www.whitebros.com/CompletesectionPDFS/ENGine.PDF, Page 23).
2) Eric Gorr low-end porting (a bargain @ $120).
3) 52-tooth steel rear sprocket + extra links; got both 4 U 2 try.

I've got the RB carb bore/divider plate ($150+); I did not notice much of a change down low.

What year is your RMX? The pre-'93's have larger exh. ports; post '95 have rediesigned intake tracks.

RMX

Make sure that te power valve isn't clogged or gummed up on it. If it's stuck it will adversly affect the bottom end. Also make sure it is adjusted properly and the spring is at proper tension. It's easy to install it wrong and back off teh tension instead of applying it. The manual for the bike has some setup tips for the power valve for low end. I put the rm head gasket on mine and it really helped power all around. I also have a FMF gnarly pipe with a rad valve on it. It is a tractor that will scream on top. the other thing to not overlook is the jetting. The air screw and pilot are what you need to look at. I found the air screw made a big difference. I also went leaner on my pilot jet. That made it have a lot more power on the bottom. I run the stock gearing on mine but 2 teeth in the rear would be a good mod too. Good luck. When jetted and set up right they run great in the woods.
