I finally got a decent lighting setup for shooting macro. It's pretty fun to look at trashed engine parts at 1:1 magnification. These are the first shots with the new gear.

Shrinking it down to fit in the forums doesn't do the pictures justice. Once I get this setup figured out I'll post some full size, full res images on my website.

In the meantime here is an exhaust rocker from a CRF250 that had an been run almost completely out of oil. The first pic is a resized 1:1 shot, the second shot is a 100% crop of the same image.

Dave - I went back through my notes. It wasn't a restriction , it was a CRF250 that was run with little to no oil left in it. The damage was much less than I would have guessed.

The crank we pulled out of it looked really good. We replaced it , but I was shocked at how well it held up. I think it might have been a case of the rider changing the oil but not filling it back up afterwards. So the only oil was the little left in the sump after a change, and the oil still trapped in the filter. Pretty impressive really. I'll check and see if Eric remembers the exact stroy behind this.

Now that I have some really good macro photo gear I'll be posting a lot more CSI type photos with the stories behind them. I think it should help folks learn how to avoid some of the 2-stroke and 4-stroke maintenance pitfalls.

I'm using a Nikon D200 body, with a 60mm f/2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor lens, and the Nikon R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System. It's pretty sweet :)

The funny part is that shot isn't as clear as it could be because I didn't have time to set up the tripod and did it handheld, which is a bad idea at this magnification level. I have a focusing rail coming for it so I can get really sharp images with perfect focus. I'll set it up on the tripod and post some better shots this weekend.

Here's what the rig looks like :

Very nice... Looks like the rig they use on CSI-NY... I hate that show by the way.... mostly because they use that camera for shots that aren't closeup... and never as bright as you'd expect with that flash...

I've never seen it. :whoa: That's how I can afford this stuff, no cable and a 17 year old TV I never really watch so it doesn't wear out. ;)

Interesting photo work.
