Try to include the following info in your first post
1) your physical size (both height and weight are important)5'11"" 170lbs. 44 years old.

2) How physical / aggressive are you ? Great shape, no mx racer though
3) what do you plan to ride- MX/SX tracks, woods, fields with friends or ????? Trails, Railroad grades fields
4) Do you have any riding experience? Yes, been on bikes most of my life
5) Do you think you will race ? NO
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work? Yes, will do my own maintenance
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)? Leaning towards 4 strokes
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry? Have most dealers
9) How much do you plan to spend on a bike?$3500
10) anything else that you think would help form an opinion Want to ride with my sons, both on XR80. Normally go out for a half of day riding trails, grades etc... A little aggressive but mainly family fun.

I found a super deal on a 05 CRF250R with less then an hour of time on it. I have searched and read numerous posts on this bike. I understand this bike, along with other racing 4 strokes are high maintenance and have valve issues. As stated above, I don't race and will trail ride with my kids.

The question is...... How long is this engine/valves/piston going to last if I don't pound it or rev the crap out of it? I don't like the sounds of having to replace a piston and valve train every year or sooner. If I'm easy on the bike and check valve clearance often, would this bike last awhile before any major repairs? Am I getting myself into too much if I purchase this bike with my current riding style?
I understand a KDX or CRF230 would better suit my riding style but this bike could be had at a hard to refuse price.

Any help would be appreciated.

You'll love this bike and if you check the valve clearances you'll never have a problem. I've had mine for (an 06 CR250F) for 5 months now and haven't had a lick of trouble. I ride MX 2-3 times a week and have raced over a dozen times on it. I'm beginning to think the valve problems are either something that was more prevalent with the early MX 4-strokes or something that only A/B riders have from punishing the bike a lot harder than I am as a slow C rider.

Thanks for the reply, I kinda was thinking that also. I also think there have been riders that were used to the XR's and other bikes that you pretty much just put gas in and go, but do the same on these new four strokes without maintenance and wreck the valves/head etc..
