hey all,

just got me a 07 KX250 and was looking through the manual break-in period recommendations. I probably put 2 to 3 hrs on it so far, the manual says to drain the trany oil, suspension oil, drain the coolant, and change out the piston ring. Is all this necessary? The other things aren't a big deal but I know changing the piston ring will take some time. Also if you guys have any other recommendations that would be great. Is a BR8ES plug too hot for the KX? I also have some excess oil dripping down the end of the pipe and leaking out of a connection point between the header and pipe, is this normal? I think the dealership might of did a mix with more oil for the break in, thanks for the help guys! :aj:

i dont know that you necisarily need to get new rings. it main matters if you got the money then do it, but if you dont i think you can hold off on that.

Definately change the oil in the engine/trans (really should have done it around the first hour mark) and then change it regularly. Make sure you have a clean air filter (do this after every ride and clean as needed). You shouldn't need to change the suspension oil so soon but think about it mid season if you are riding alot and hard (especially racing or in wet conditions). The piston ring should be fine and will last much longer then 3 hours.

The excess oil dripping is spooge and is not really due to gas/oil ratio but more related to you being jetted rich (normal from the factory as they jet for an average and not your location). Buy a couple sets of jets both leaner and richer from the stock and experiment. You won't hurt the engine having more oil in the gas than you will with to little. The spooge also could be from not getting the bike up into the meat of the power- if you were just putting around at low throttle it will tend to spooge more

Can't help with the plug as I have never had a green machine

It can also be the possiblity that there is more oil in the mix considering the fact that it is in its break in period, I was like that when i got my first bike, i would be really paranoid, now i just ride and do what is nessesary like the oils and stuff , If it aint broke dont fix it, just ride it like you stole it man....nice bike by the way

the piston is fine- i would just change the oil- the coolant and fork oil are fine- u should grease all the bearings if u havent already- i think there is a grease shortage in japan- make sure to keep the air filter clean and the oil changed and you should be good for a while- depending on how much riding you do u might want to change the fork oil midway through the season- i raced and i changed my fork oil before every season
