My brother just got an 02 drz400e. Are there any suggested things to do right away. I know many bikes suffer from air starvation and some have plugs in the silencer that need removing. I'm just looking for these simple things that don't cost much to start with. I wish I had the answers for him but i'm still a 2-stroker.

There are ALOT of things you can do to the DRZ.

First, pull that rubber plug out of the top of the airbox, and drill the endcap to a larger hole (or a whole new exhaust would be best). After doing both of these, slap a 160 main and a 48 pilot jet in there, and move the needle to the 5th clip positition (from the top). This will give you ALOT more power. (**NOTE** if he is above sea level, the main jet may need to be lower than 160 or 165.)

You can go even further and drill some holes in the plate in the exhaust behind the endcap.

New bars are almost a must, and a skid plate don't hurt either. thumpertalk.com has some really good case savers for 50 bucks, they get siliconed onto the clutch cover and ignition cover, as they are soft magnesium stock.

And grind the sharp edge off of the shifter right away.

And don't forget to RIDE it! :)

WowMan, I ride a 01 E. Could you perhaps elaborate on

"You can go even further and drill some holes in the plate in the exhaust behind the endcap. "

Maybe some pics, sounds interesting !

If ya pull the end cap off and look inside you will see where to drill. There is a baffle just like in a car muffler. if you drill holes in it your pipe will be more free flowing but also a little louder.

Yeah, what he said! But really, take off the endcap via the 3 allen screws, and there will be just a little hole where the exhaust comes out. If you drill more holes around that, you will get much better flow and will be louder, as KdxChode said.

Another thing to do is get a "EKP" or "EMM" needle for the carb. About 12 bucks each. They are yamaha parts, yet work in the DRZ carb as well. The EKP gives a bit more power in the mid-top end power (and is fatter, so the main jet must be reduced 2 sizes or so than with a regular needle).

The EMM needle is the same exact profile as the EKP from 1/4 throttle to full, but from 0-1/4 throttle it is richer, giving even better performance at lower throttle postitions.

Contact sudco.com or carbparts.com and tell them you want a EKP or EMM needle for a Kehein FCR39, they'll hook you up. :D

Another thing to do that I have done is the "Taffy Mod". What this does is reduce the duration of the accelerator pump, as the stock duration is far too long. As a result of being too long, there is usually a pretty bad off-idle bog.

I made a page describing how to do the taffy mod, click HERE .

Well if you need any further explanation or mod ideas just ask! :)

Sorry to dig this one up from the grave, but would these mods apply to a 2000 DRZ? A poor college friend of mine has one and is looking for cheap ways to increase power. Thanks in advance.
