Could you guys please explain to me what's goin' on here? I just recieved an 'out of the blue' RED sticker for a bike that was formerly GREEN stickered (03 KX100). Why it was green stickered in the first place is beyond me! To top it off, it came with a bill for $3.00 :| .

The was i understand it is, all 2002 and older bikes will be green.. Not sure what will be red, i dont think all 2003 and newer bikes will red.. Cali's bike laws are as confusing as the gun laws

Got the green sticker in the mail today, I knew this was brewing for some time. Being a "last eligible 2-stroke", my 4 month old 02 EXC 300 resale value just went up a notch!

Green = meeting the ARB and year round riding
Red = Not meeting ARB and restricted to certain times of year or closed course

Thanks, people, for clearing that up for me. It's a bummer about the red sticker on my kid's bike, but the good thing is that the red sticker means nothing this far north (Mendicino Nat'nl Forest). The air quality is good enough so there are no restrictions on riding :yeehaw: .

This has come up already and JPIVEY explained it right. I spoke to ARB the other day about it for 89er and they told me that the reason for the green/red sticker deal right now is supposed to be for the good of the majority of riders. They basically grandfathered in 2002 and older bikes as green sticker and then 2003 would then be determined by the 8th digit for red or green. But in doing this program, they were going to have to crack down on foreign registered bikes, ie Canadian.

As far as Canada goes, he told me that if a bike comes from Canada, they have the right to deny reg if it doesn't comply or is "certified" for California. A letter has to accompany the registration stating that the manufacturer certifies the bike for California. Good luck on getting one to state that. It may comply or be similar to California standards but if they don't write those magic words, certify, forget it. I believe if they state this, they are compelled to assure it will meet the standards or they have to repair it.

Here's another bit of great news. There's a greenie group that is in the process of filing a lawsuit against the off-raod bikes that are dual registered for street. If they win it, that will force the ARB and DMV to go back to 1997 and revoke street use registrations issued after that date. This is new news to me so if anyone can find out what group is doing this and why, that would help.

I was told the same thing, but he would not say who it was; I mentioned the CDC and he did say " No not them ", He also said that this group could actually make the DMV go back as far as 1977 to review all registrations
