Been thinking about getting into this sport for a long time. This spring / summer is looking like it may finally happen. I am currently a snowmobiler & mountain biker among other stuff. We live in Boise, Idaho, with lots of good trail riding around us.
I registered to get some information about getting started properly. It will be me and my son now and later my wife when she is recovered from back surgery...maybe a year down the road. My son and I have relatively zero time on bikes.
One question I have is how small/big to go for my son's first bike. He is 13 and weighs around 110-120 lbs. I am thinking of the 230/250 class four-strokes. Will this be too big to start out on, both frame-size and motor? As for me, I am thinking of getting a KTM 300. My thought about the bike for my son is that he can hand it off to my wife at some point if/when he outgrows it.
I am looking at getting these bikes and then keeping them for a while, so I want to get something we can handle and grow into, without growing out of them too fast. I can see my son growing out of his, but that is it. Am I going about this wrong to start with? Any suggestions for getting started the right way, good or bad would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
