New to dirtbikes

Hello. I am new to dirtbikes and interested in buying one.

Try to include the following info in your first post
1) your physical size - 5'5 125 pounds
2) How physical / aggressive are you ? 6/10
3) what do you plan to ride - neighborhood, lots of fields, woods
4) Do you have any riding experience? ttr90 long ago
5) Do you think you will race ? no
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work? yes
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)? i want a 4 stoke and i have been looking at honda/kawasaki bikes
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry? yes all dealers
9) How much do you plan to spend on a bike? im on a pretty tight budget
10) anything else that you think would help form an opinion
im not sure whether to go with a full sized bike (CRF150F), a medium sized bike to putt-around on(XR80, XR100), or a little pit bike(KLX110).

What type of bike do you think fits my needs best?

The CRF150F is a great bike. It has alot of aftermarket parts so that it can suit you for many years to come. If you could find a KDX80 it would be a great bike or a DS80 and they are alot cheaper.

A few months ago, I was in the same dilemma. I wanted a pair of good 4 strokes(for my son and I) with enough power for trail busting,etc. I ended up buying a pair of Redcat 150's(Chinese). The Redcats, Roketas and Hensims really give you alot for the $$$. So far, I'm very impressed, they sound and ride very similar to a Honda(smooth). The Redcat 150's have a seat height of only 29 inches(we're short also). Given your limited budget, you may want to take a look at these before you make your final decision. They're about 1/3 or 1/2 the price of a Honda.

hey, i was in your spot about half a year ago and got a 85 big wheel, i wish i had of got a 125 so i could grow into it, your 14, get a full size bike, like a wr250, its a nice 4 stroke, my friends dad has one.

Dont worry about its size, i ride my dads xr400 all the time, and im 5'8" and 135 (pretty skinny) and its a 260 pound bike.

Get a full size bike, your 14 youll grow more. You can find some good used 125s or kdxs, for cheap and there great bikes.

redcat150, i have thought about looking at the chinese bikes but have a bad feeling about them. I would feel more comfortable buying a honda or other big name bike. They are just what ive grown up around. I'm still not sure that a full sized bike would be the best thing for riding around my neighborhood and local fields. I dont need anything more than a playbike. Thanks for the suggestions and anymore would be appriciated.

Well a 150 is a good play bike, but better to have a little big of a bike than a too small one, enless its a 150r its gonna pretty slow, and the r is expensive to maintain. can you could find a nice used wr for cheaper than the 150.

Just try to find a crf150f, and then shortly after you can get a nice 125 or 250f...
doubtfull you'll be on that 150 for long, I recently took one for a spin and had a great time, perfect playbike for me, at 6'0 210#

Thanks for all the suggestions. Now I just have to keep looking in the papers and cycle trader for used bikes in my area for a good price.
