Clear Channel Entertainment's motor sports division announced today that Round 6 of EA SPORTS Supercross from Indianapolis' RCA Dome received a 1.6 overnight Nielsen rating on ABC's Wide World of Sports. The 1.6 rating, which represents 1,740,800 households, is the highest since 1999's ABC broadcast of supercross from Texas Stadium.

In a highly competitive television weekend, with the kick off of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the 2002 NBA All-Star Game that featured the return of Michael Jordan, EA SPORTS Supercross earned ratings higher than NCAA Basketball that received a 1.3 Nielsen rating.

The two races aired on ABC featured the 125cc and 250cc main events, each boasting dramatic finishes, as rookie Chad Reed won his first 125cc professional race of his career and David Vuillemin, the winner of three races in 2002, passed reigning champion Ricky Carmichael on the last lap, extending his season points lead to 18 in front of a sell-out crowd of 57,803 fans.

"This marks EA SPORTS Supercross' highest rating in three years, and the sixth capacity crowd of the season, both of which are testaments of the overwhelming growth of the most successful motorcycle series in the world," said Mike Weber, executive vice president of television and licensing, Clear Channel Entertainment - Motor Sports.

 Our sport needs this type of exposure from the big boys like ABC. Maybe they'll see a trend here, and broadcast more rounds in the future.
How about it ABC-a live broadcast from Las Vegas?
