I bet this has been discussed before, but im bringing it up anyway. I went out to a local riding area that I havent been to for a long time. I decided last time I was there I wasnt going back, but I did. Anyway, its not that great of place and there are always a bunch of old people on quads with no helmets or anything. A lot of times they ride 2 up. Only a few bikes are ever out there, but there are a lot of jumps that someone has been building. Back to the point, the old quad people always give me dirty looks like im crazy or something. I think its the other way around, they dont know what they are doing out there. Today was the last straw though, after getting dirty looks from all these people there was an old lady that tried to climb a hill and rolled down and broke her leg. Well, me and my friend saw the whole thing happen and were the first ones there. We dont know first aid or anything like that, so we really couldnt help in that way, but my friend rolled the four wheeler off of her and discovered that it was in SIXTH GEAR. She was trying to climb a hill that I have to shift down to second to climb in SIXTH GEAR. Now you would think that when your laying on the ground with a 600lb quad on top of you, you would be happy when someone shows up to get it off of you, well she told us to leave her alone and to go get her husband. I understand that she was hurt and all, but when I went down and got her husband, he was just as rude. I told him her leg was broken and offered my cell phone to call an ambulance, but nooooooo he didnt want to believe me so he took off up there to see for himself, then he decided that cell phone was a good idea and I let him call 911. He gave the phone back and said they would be fine and we could leave, so we gave up on being nice and went back to riding. I dont know what my point is, but I think quad people need help. Im done now, thanks for listening.

I know some good people that ride quads that do wear the gear. And are very good riders that know what there doing. But on the other hand I've seen and heard of some real STUPID quad riders that DONT know how to ride one and dont wear ANY gear. Theese are the type of people that should not be riding.

It seems that people get a false sense of security on 4 -wheeled vehicles. This however is not the case. When you crash on a bike, it usually lays down and stops. On the other hand, when you roll a quad it keeps rolling. I have been in much worse crashes on my old quad than on my bike. I still like to ride it sometimes though. I know many of you will say eeww a quad. But I dont care because I like it. Anyways I dont think that quads are for beginners, they weigh more and they tumble. Oh yeah 4x4 quads are a joke.

There's this one track I race a couple of times a month. Each time I go these same to girls approx late 20's early 30's are there riding a quad. Neither have a helmet and ride in shorts and flip flops, the one in back sometimes helps out by holding the one in fronts beer while they do power slides. I've never figured out how they keep from killing themselves or anyone else. They just pit ride and do it fast, cigarettes, beer and all. Sad part is I've talked to them and they seem real nice but they just don't think it can happen to them. The guys they are there with race bikes and wear all the gear, I never see the guys on the quad.

Like you guys have said, there are some good quad riders, one of my best friends rides a quad, but he wears more gear than I do and its a banshee, not a 4x4. Hes rolled it down hills quite a bit, and never got hurt because he knows what to do, bail and let the quad roll.

lost in the deserts of NM
Stupidity is far from being limited to quad riders.
There's a guy a few houses down from me who takes his new KTM mx'r for a ride down the STREET a few times every weekend.
no helmet on of course. wears the fancy/shmancy jersey and pants, but no helmet.
Last week, while on the way home from work, i saw a couple of the local teen street punks out riding.
2 up, NO gear whatsoever, on a Z50 and a new XR70.
Riding right down the main drag, swerving all over the road, and even ran a stop sign.
(oh to have had a loaded Anaconda at the time.)
oh dont whine, i only would have shot out their tires.......honest.:p
Even the hids -w- full gear on, who go riding from their houses to the riding spots down the ROAD. thats sorta stupid , you think???
I guess if Mr.Badpoliceman takes away their widdle bikes, rich daddy will just buy them a new one.
oh........(ahem)........am i ranting?????
sorry...............................................NOT.

There is this little girl across the street with a little 50 auto and she just rides back and forth across the street. One time it died on her so she just left it in the street so i went out and moved it. right as the cops came and i got in trouble.....

Darwins theory of evolution, just let them not wear helmets, mankind will be better off.

My three favorite quad moments:

1) watching a group of idiots ride around in a septic pit being used as a settling tank that they thought was a mud hole. Another group of quaders asked why I wasn't going to tell them what they were riding in? I told them they looked like they were having too much fun and I'd tell them after they were crusty and crappy. You should have seen them ripping their clothes off when I did finaly tell them.

2) Watching dad walk a lonely walk back to his vehicle to come pick up the helmetless family being held by the park ranger for no helmets. Thinking about the fine total for six riders without lids or registration.

3) Watch a grown man pout because the ranger was holding his quad collateral till he walked back to get his license and wallet for the citation he was going to get for riding on the lake bed after we told him not to do it.

I like the darwin theory but they always find someone to sue. Then we lose riding areas like little beaver from lawsuits.

some of my best friends are quaddies, and they ride better than i do!!

ive seen those people riding without any gear, like shorts, teeshirts, and tennis shoes. i ride in workboots, jeans, a walmart jerseyey, and a cheepy vega helmet.

i say stick with the darwin theory, and eventually those helmetless @$$es will disappear.:p

my 2 cents

Old: when you can no longer balance on two wheels through two concsecutive corners.

You buy a quad when you can't make a full lap with out dying for a beer so you get a quad to hold the cooler.

old?

wHAT IS OLD?? iS THIS SOMEONE OVER 30, MAYBE 40, 50, 60??

It's too bad some people are riding unsafely, however, depending on the AGE of these OLD riders you may find they grew up in an era where seat belts were never used, cars had front and rear drum brakes and no antilock, rear wheel drive was the only option , and there were no real dirt bikes available. These OLD people probably grew up then and never learned to use the modern gear available, I'm pretty sure they don't subscribe to the dirt mags of today or get the catalogs that influence us YOUNGER riders.

Chin up old man, you don't live forever (neither do they).

I knew I would get in trouble for using the word "old". There is no definition for "old" but the people I saw on those quads were old, or they would at least be on a four wheeler that didnt have racks.

dave186, unfortunately this is an old story here at DRN. This topic has spawned many heated debates and received much bashing. Furthermore, the word "quad" had been banned for some time because of the conflict of personalities associated with "quads".
It sounds like you did the best you could. It would be nice to be able to change the situation single handedly but you and many others realize that it just won't happen. I would suggest that you make a statement to the authorities concerning what you saw. Time, place, age of rider, gear, etc. If a lawsuit is filed your statement may help to keep the area open to responsible riders and not closed. It may take some of your time to do this, you could even be called as a witness if the case went to court but you would be doing yourself AND all other responsible riders (bikes and quads) a favor in helping put an end to stupid behaviour that will kill our public riding areas forever.

I knew this topic has been tossed around a million times, even stated that in my first post, but it made me mad, thats why its here in the flame forum. You have a good idea, and if this had happened at any other riding area, I would do it. Actually I might still do it, but this place is going to be shut down sometime soon. I dont know the details, but the local landfill is right across the street, and almost full so they bought this area from the BLM or whoever owned it. Like I said im not sure, but its going to be a dump within 5 years. Now that I think about it, thats not a good thing either. All those people on quads with no gear will be coming out to the good places to ride.:ugg:

I don't understand what makes a person take something like seeing a dumbass redneck on a quad with no helmet, personally. I think it's kinda funny. Generally, here the asswipes have enough sense to make their children wear helmets (at least), or that might actually piss me off.

I have no problem with them. They tend to stay away from me. Far away. And certainly not behind me, since large grain sand, shale and rock are ever present here. For some reason, the green witch likes make a roost of about 30-50 feet with that little 120 intermediate tire.;)

For some reason, intermittently, a few of those rocks and large amounts of heavy sand end up in the face of some big sunburned frowning redneck.:p But to this day, I've never been confronted--because they know DAMN good and well it's their fault for not wearing gear.

They just stay away, and it's an unsaid agreement that works out well for the both of us.

So have fun with it. Cheers.:)
