One more time,KDX vs. KTM

I recently went down to Southern California.I didn't take my KDX,but my brother in law was kind enough to take me riding and let me borrow one of his bikes ... A '99 KTM 300 MXC.I was very excited to ride the KTM because as we all know,it is every KDX owners dream to have a KTM.
We set the sag and handlebars and headed out for a really cool riding area known as "Texas Canyon"(for all you So Cal guys).The conditions were great and the bike was really nice,but you know what,the KTM was NOT"All that".After a nice day of riding,I'd say my '92KDX vs. the KTM ... a tossup.For my money,when it comes time, I will probably get a newer used KDX.Actually I would even say my KDX is a little more comfortable. .... Before having owned the KDX, I owned a mid nineties era 250EXC. Not to compare a 95 with a 2005, but the bike wasn't, in my estimation, to feature as much a performance advantage as to compensate for its lack of reliability. It wasn't that bad, but again, it didn't reach my standards. constant jetting woes, ignition problems. Parts were accessible and prices within reason. But I just never had the confidence to venture far like I have had on KDX and its predecessors; mid size air cooled thumpers of various makes

The only bike I dream to have after the KDX is a KX 250 2 stroke with long range tank .

On second thoughts would still keep the KDX and have the KX as a second bike

I thnk most of us could have any bike of our choice, It's not a matter of money, but a matter of being realistic about what makes a great day of riding. I've won a few ISDE's many times in my head on my KDX and being a Formula One fan I've passed Michael Schumacher on the straight a time or two also. (not on the KDX).

It's fun to ride other bikes, I've ridden quite a few, but it comes down to what other bike can you ride all day, in any terrain and cost little by comparison to fix or upgrade and never lets you down?

Last week I stood in front of twenty or so brandy new KTMs at a dealer and was drooling like a rabid mutt. They had two of every model, (even the 105's) The point is, I do the same at the Hondas, Yams and even the Suzukis. Road, dirt, DS, it's a bike thing.

I'm getting a KTM next year to sit next to the KDX. Why? because I already have a KDX...duh. I'm not sure which at this point.

KTM/KDX War

I own 2 KTMs and a 2002 KDX200 (w/KX forks). The KDX is a terrific and solidy built bike but there's no comparison in the power/performance dept. to the recent KTMs. It's fun to try different bikes and you should ride whatever works for you and that you enjoy riding. I plan to try an '07 KTM 250SXF/XCF and see how it compares to my 200EXC and 400EXC, both of which are awesome bikes. I like the light weight of the 2 strokes but the new enduro 250F is supposed to be as light as the SX version (216 dry). BTW, KTM used to make a 250F enduro bike (in addition to their 250 2 stroke) but the 250F had a weak motor. It was discontinued in 2005. That same year KTM introduced the 250SXF, a new motor that is waaay fast. The '07 250XCF will use this motor. Ok, sorry for the needless info on KTMs...

I've ridden a KDX. Suspension was waaaayyyy too soft. I really like my Gasser and can't see going back to a non-race bike ever.

I heard that GasGas' are true to their name because you have to fill them up twice as often. Is this true or just a rumor started by the Husky crowd?

Rumour as far as I'm concerned. My bike has a 2.5 liter tank that gets me 60-80 miles of trail riding, around 50 miles at race pace, depending on the course. I absolutely love my GasGas and don't plan on switching brands for offroad racing. For motocross I wouldn't recommend them but my EC is magic on the trails.

Same here. I MIGHT settle for a YZ250 with FWW and big tank. But I have been tempted by and successfully whipped the Pumpkin Demon.

Each has strengths/weaknesses.
Since I'm a glass half-full kind of guy, I focus on the good things on each bike when riding.
My KTM 400 (Thumper Racing 450 kit) has GOBS of controlable tractable power, anytime and anywhere. ('Specially when just coming off the KDX)
My KDX is light, easily threaded through the thickets. ('Specially when just coming off the KTM) Fun to wind it up and get the 2 stroke power surge in the open.
If I had to give one up...... coin toss.
Economic$ favors the KDX.
