Parts washer fluid

What type of fluid are you using in your "home shop" parts washer? I am looking for something that isn't smelly and is easy to dispose of when it gets dirty.

I tried some "degreaser" ... totally useless.

Knowing how well Hoppe's gun cleaner worked, I searched for homebrew gun cleaner recipes and found Ed's Red. It's more or less 50/50 odorless mineral spirits and clean kerosene, with a little ATF added. It absolutely rocks for cleaning parts.

And it doesn't meet your easy-to-dispose criteria.

If you are old enough to buy it, try Golden Grain or Everclear. When I worked in a liquor store, I had a regular customer purchase it by the case because "it's cheaper and works better".

Mineral spirits from the paint store. It may tingle your wrist a little but its cheaper.

After trying multiple solvent solutions (1 part product, 10 parts water), I have come to the conclusion that none of them even approach the quality of good ole petroleum based parts cleaner. I have no plans on trying anything else anytime soon.

Agreed...nothing works like the nasty stuff.

I use Saftey Clean.
