Just got the "Nifty Fifty" (Canon 50mm 1.8) that everyone talks about, super cheap lens, good for portrait stuff and low light. Set-up a little test shot.
All ambient light, late afternoon, dim room (my office), Pretty damn impressive for $69!

Got a link to some specs? $70 for Canon glass seems more than reasonable! Fixed focal length, I assume? Would be a great GP lens, no?

B&H is where I have bought most everything ove the last couple of years.

Have you guys seen the Layers magazine? It used to be Mac Something but they caved and renamed it to wrap in PC systems as well. The letters to the editor are a hoot, as the Mac guys are pissin and moanin. This is only their third issue under the new format. It is expensive to buy ($9.99) but cheap to get a subscription for ($19.99 per year) for 6 issues. This one has a bunch of great post processing tips for CS2 and two or three articles about fonts and banners, etc. Very good magazine and worth the $$. I got my copy at Fry's, but I am betting any large computer store will have them.

Bob: I like the 85 focal length for portraits and closeups. I wish my lens was a F2.8. The fast lenses is what I miss most from my film cameras. I just don't have the jack to get the really fast lenses now.

Tony.. quit trying to buy fast Canon glass :p
Tamron makes a highly rated 28-75 and the Sigma 24-70 2.8 I have is awesome, both 1/3 the cost of Canon.

By the way, B&H is one of the most expensive places to buy, they just happened to be the only one I could find with the 50mm in stock.

For Sigma lenses, http://sigma4less.com has been great. I'll get the 70-200 from them.

Oh.. sorry for taking this back on topic you wankers

Not too bad of prices there. Did you see the $5k 800mm lenses?!

You can get a 500mm lens for Canon with a higher f-stop than the 200 for a couple hundred more. I think for the money, that 70-200 f2.8 is the best for ameteur types, like me.

Amateur or not the 70-200 f2.8 is likely the most used lens for shooting mx out there. At Millville I was lucky enough to get a press pass and while on the track pretty much every pro was sporting a 70-200 f2.8 on the camera as well as carrying a 300 or 400 F2.8 with them.

I had considered getting the "magic plastic" 50 1.8 as well Okie but kind of figured with the 1.6 crop that it would be too tight for using inside in confined spaces. I was thinking about something like the Sigma 20 1.8 but it's substantially more $ than the Canon 50.

I have no problem with non prime lenses, I just haven't got motivated to get any more glass at the moment. Once PV is in gear, I will need fast glass for "business purposes" :p

Re B&H, I should have said that I start with NexTag. For some reason, B&H has been right in there pricewise.

Anybody want to buy a VERY complete Canon FD system? :(

In my experience, anything bigger than a 20mm is a problem indoors. I got a 20mm F2.8 Canon lens off that internet auction site a couple of years back and have been happy with it. I keep watching for a 14mm to pop up, but no luck. It is the shortest lens that I know of that doesn't have distortion. It would be great for the interiors of buildings.
