Pipe Guard

Anybody ever try to make the pipe guard that is in the tech tip section? If so how did it hold up to heat and did it do it's job at protecting the pipe? Did you use polyester or epoxy resin? What problems did you have making it and what problems did you encounter while using it? Thanks for the comments.
