I am 14 5'2 and 94lbs I'm having a hard time convinceing my mom that I have outgrown the xr 80 that i have and need to move up to the cr 80. I have 2 years of experience, one of those years was with the xr 80. I sat on the cr 80 in the shop and both of my feet could touch the ground but not *flat* on the ground. She thinks the bike is too big for me because i do not tower over it like i do my xr 80. Does anyone else think that i am too small for the bike?

News for your Mom!

You have outgrown a CR80 also.

My son is your age and 5' 0" 100LBS . He is riding an KX125 and ready to move to a big bike (KX250 or YZ426F). He isn't an expert, just an everyday desert kid.

Sorry Dell30rb, Dirtbikedad is right. By the time you get the CR 80 broke in you'll be to big for it as well. Hold on for another year and you will be able to get that 125 that will rock your world. Have you got a part time job? Take the initiative and save some money and maybe your mom will help you out.

I'm going for a cr 80 because i can whip it around a trail real ez. I have sat on a 125 and it feels huge!!! Everyone around here thinks that you have to be huge compared to the bike to ride it.Even the guys at the store. I have no idea why. I will be riding mostly trails, with a little mx thrown in so i think a cr 80 is ideal... and I dont think i could abstain from riding for a whole year!!!

CR80

Well if your gonna move up to a CR80 get yourself a big wheel. They tend to be easier to sell and are more in demand. Both my kids had a CR80 (one being a big wheel) and they dont have the easiet powerband for trails. They have one heck of a power band that is setup for MX racing. If your gonna trail ride then do yourself a favor and change the front sprocket to help with the trails and hillclimbing. One tooth smaller front sprocket worked great on the kids 2000 CR's and still left them pleanty of top-end speed. Im thinking if moms worried about the 80 then she definately not gonna consider a 125 even in a year. So go with the Big Wheel at a minumum. What BSW said about earning some money isnt a bad idea either.

IMHO, based on what you said , yes you have outgrown your bike, maybe even a year ago.

My daughter is 5' 1" and 110 lbs. is currently riding a CR80re,she has been riding less than a year and this will be bike # 2 for her.

As she improves, so will her ride.

dell30rb,

Our friends son who rides with us is 12 (around 100 pounds) and moved from his CR80 to a KTM SX250 this year. The bike is a little big for him but it is much easier for him to control in the woods than his CR80 was. He does have a little trouble on hairy hill climbs where a lot of turning is involved.

My 9 year old son is on a CR80Expert (smaller rims mind you) because he outgrew his KX60. He still likes the 60 for the woods but in the rocky areas it beats him to death. He does better on the CR80 even though it is still a little tall for him - it handles the bigger rocks better. The only problem he has is when he needs to put a foot down quickly - he falls over once in awhile. Best part about the Expert is that when he gets taller we'll go back to the stock rims.

My nephew who has ridden for years was on a KLX250 and KX250 for trails at age 14 - he was about 5'5" and maybe 120 lbs back then. He did great on the 250's, except the occasional tip over when he couldn't get a foot down quick enough.

Ride what you are comfortable on but don't be afraid of something that is a little tall, you will grow (the bike won't) and your skill will increase. As for the guy at the store, the salesman where my son bought his bike still tells him the bike is too big for him (9 months later). We just laugh and tell him he's right but he still races it and rides the trails with no more problems than I have. :think Of course they say my bike is too big for me too. :think

don't worry about getting both feet to touch the ground. the only time i can solidly touch both feet to the ground on my 426 is when i wreck:eek: which is often enough. hmmm...maybe i need a "when will i grow into my 426?" post...nah, on second thought i'm afraid i already know the answer.:D

he says from an xr80 to a 125 would be too much, especially from riding a small 4 stroker to a big 2 smoker..his CR80 Big Wheel is about 34"high S/H.
hey good luck >>>..later YO! or maybe even a bigger 4stroker???

THe only problem is that no one in my family rides. At all. So i get no sympathy when i want a new bike or parts. (ie. NO CASH!!) Even though my parents have plentyof dough and they know it. I think their afraid of me getting hurt. Even though the worst wreck i ever had (Rolling down a rocky hill) only left me with a bruise and a few scratches.

Yeah. Getting a foot on the ground quick is a big concern for me. I ride at uwharrie forest, and they have the gnarliest trails you will ever see. The trails are about 7 feet wide and there are some really huge downhills and up hill things that can only be covered with a monster 4x4. I also ride at poole rd. It has some small doubles, lots of whoops and this one thing that is carved into a mini cliff (About 9 feet high) that rockets you almost straight up about 20 feet. I absolutely punish my xr on these things, I'm overweight for the suspension and i slam it down hard on landings
(sometimes i cant get up enough speed to clear the second jump)

To those saying he should get a 125, 2 years experience on an XR80 does not prove he is ready for a 125. Especially when no one in his family rides and can help him with what is safe and what isn't. Also, all of the 80s are designed for a rider from 100 to 160lbs. Until someone is over 5'5" 160lbs they aren't TOO BIG for the bike. They may be good enough to move up before that, but that doesn't make them too big for an 80.
My son is 13 5'1" 110lbs and fits his yz85 about the same as I fit my 125. He has riden my 125 but certainly cannot yet handle it on a track.

The real tell is, can you pick it up after you drop it, restart it on flat ground with out something to stand on.

With that said, yes you are too big for an xr80. And you should fit a CR80E or KX100. On the CR you sat on, how far did the bike sink? It should drop about 3 inches with you on it. If it didn't it wasn't set right for your weight. Also show you mom that the shock has an adjustment and you can lower the seat. You may have to adjust it down lower than where it handles the best to get her to let you have it, but once you show her you can handle it, then you can adjust it back up.
Oh and you should have asked her for an XR200, then settled for an CR80 when she thought the XR200 was too big.:debil:

Go for the CR80E. No way could you handle a 125. As stated before, if you can't pick the bike up, get on it and restart it, you should be riding it. I'm 5'9", 140lbs, and i'm considering 125s or XR200Rs. I know that I can't pick up an XR250R, so even though I'm tall enough, it's too heavy, so the 200 is right. Go with the CR80E, you'll be glad you did.

I think the 80 is a good choice. I'm 15, and got a YZ 80 when I turned 13 and then a YZ 125 when I turned 14 and I was about 5'1 110. The bike was toooo big for a long time. I never even got good on it before I got my 2001 YZ250f. I am just now big enough for a full size bike over 1 year later:scream: (5'7" 120 lbs)! Get a CR 80 big wheel. There was lots of times when I got my 125 that I wished I got a CR 80 big wheel instead of the 125. The power was great on the 125 but the size wasn't. Luckily I didn't suffer much in my progression by moving up too soon, my 250f is so amazing that I am progressing great and moved up 2 classes in speed over the summer and am still getting faster!! I say get the 80 big wheel and then in a year or 2 try and get them to get you a 250f:D !! Anyway have fun with whatever you get. It's almost impossible not to have fun on any dirt bike no matter what one it is in my opinion.

My uncle rides an xr 250. And if i do say so myself i'm pretty good. I just dont know how a 125 will handle and i dont want to get in over my head (or my budget) my mom wont let me buy a used bike cause shes afraid i'll end up with a bad one. (I dont know why) I'm going riding this weekend and my uncle is coming along so i'll try to ride his 250. Mabye after i know how it handles I'll think about a diff. bike

I was thinking about a bigger 4 stroker, and i can handle an xr 200 but i want something with very good suspension. and the xr 250 is too heavy for me to pick up without trying really really hard. My xr 80 is a piece of cake though.

The main problem with my mom is that she never actually has a chance to see me ride. She takes the bike over to the riding area and then sits there while i do the 9 minute trail ride to get to the MX jumps. ANd i cant really do those anyway because my xr80 has very poor suspension. any jump more than 3 feet will result in a bottoming of the susp. My uncle saw me once and suggested that i get suspension improvements but i told him that there were none around. (For my bike to give it more travel) Is the big wheel legal to race? (MX)

Dude, Go with the CR80. Dikes are no different that cars. Your not going to go from a go-cart to a Mustang, are you?

You need a little more time before stepping up to a 125.

Ride the CR80 for a year and then sell it and get the 125.

Sometimes spelling counts.

Yes, stick with the CR80 for a year. Move to a 125 in a few years.

come on!!!!!:think a 12 year old 100 pound kid riding a 250. and not only a 250 but a ktm 250 sx the most hard hitting 250 in its class and on top of that he isnt riding in the desert where you dont have to throw the bike arouif you dont want to but hes riding in the woods. honestly is this supposed to be a joke. my friend who is 5'8" and 140 pounds has a cr 250 and has a hard time with it in the woods so i dont see how he can possibly ride this bike for more than a foot!!!!!!! My favorite part however is when you say, " The bike is a little big for him but it is much easier for him to control in the woods than his CR80 was." i cant fathem how a bike that is way to big for him to be riding can be easier to control in the woods than a cr 80. i ride a 125 and love it. it has plenty of power and is nice and light but i have trouble with the bike through rocky sections and some really tight turns but i know that i would be able to throw an 80 around and be able to ride it easier than a 125. this is just common sense that a smaller bike would be easier to handle in the woods than a large bike. especially for a 100 pound 12 yr old!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway. my advise to you, Dell, would be to get the 125. if your mom has a problem with it show her all these posts, except kelvinkdx's, for obvious reasons. i was 5'2" and 93 lbs when i picked up my 125 and i felt a little unstable on the bike at first but after about a month on the bike i felt right at home. also i was contemplating the 80 or 100 and opted for a 125!!!!!!!! and im very happy i did. not even a year later i am now 5'6" and weighing in at a hefty 120lbs. this just goes to show that you can grow at any moment. hope this helps.:) :) :)

Del , My oldest son is 5'5' and about 125 lbs and he is riding a 99 KTM 200exc . He started on a 96 yz 80 and moved straight to the 200 and he rides the 200 better than he could ever ride the little 80 . Now my youngest son who is 13 and is 5'2" 100 lbs is on the yz 80 and if i had the money he would have a new Ktm200exc for X-mas but he will have to wait untill summer of next year for the upgrade
