Detroit Free Press Article on the Jackpine I found their lead in to this article great! Kinda cool to see Ted's name right there with Lafferty, Luca and Edmondson! Keep on going Ted! >>>>>>>>>> Monday August 22, 2005 Headline:Age doesn't stop biker At an age when most men are happy to get around a golf course in an electric cart, Ted del Solar strapped on protective boots and body armor Sunday to join 247 other riders for the 100-mile Jack Pine Enduro motorcycle race through the woods of the northern Lower Peninsula. Del Solar, 77, of Westmont, Ill., continues to race dirt bikes despite crashes in which he broke two ribs in 2000 and a rib and collarbone last year. His wife, Connie, said that after his latest crash, "He called and said, 'I'm staying over. I'm not coming home until tomorrow.' I said, 'How bad are you hurt?' Because that's the only time he doesn't come right home." The winner of the 80th annual Jack Pine Cow Bell Trophy, which ties with a race in Europe as the longest-running motorcycle event, was six-time national enduro champion Mike Lafferty, 29, of Meadowbrook, N.J. Lafferty finished the course with 30 penalty points. Scott Luca of Kalkaska was second with 34, and Stephen Edmundson of Augusta, S.C., was third at 35. Del Solar finished tenth in the masters class. The race was like a car rally, with riders required to hit check points at specified times. But average speeds were set so high that the riders had to go as fast as possible on the twisting, single-track trails. By Eric Sharp
