Here you go Brian. For Pine Cone I rode with Nathan and Erin, the same as at the spring version. Nate led as timekeeper and did a fine job. No hot checks this time. My job was to follow and see that Erin did the best to keep her first in class position. It worked, for she beat me by three points on top of that. It was a good course, but I thought the hill section would be on the hard side for the little ones. It was west of M-66 somewhere. There were no complaints about it though. At least that is what I was told. I ran Vintage class on DAVIE and came in third with 24 points down. The class winner only lost 12 seconds. It was a good time and an enjoyable ride with the only exception being that F&S wouldn't let me protest a check.

My part for Jack Pine is very different. I was on row 50 back out of the way from the fast guys. The first four miles around the club property were tougher than last year. A few wet spots that caused delays. My biggest trouble was with the clutch having too much free play and not fully releasing. As a result, I stalled out a lot and didn't make turns where I really wanted to go. Got stuck in one rut due to lack of momentum and had help getting through. With various other delays I finally got out to Johnson Rd. down 41 minutes. The ten minute reset and nine miles of road and two track only helped me pick up 8 minutes by check two. This was the start of a new trail section that ran 6.4 miles. It was tight and full of small saplings, branches and everything else you find in a new trail. With more stalling out and simply trying to ride safely, I got to the out check at 24 miles, 8 minutes over my hour. Time to call it quits and add one more event in the DNF column. Although it would have been nice to have done better, there are no complaints on my part.
Overall, I would say it was the toughest Jack Pine that I have ever ridden. With all the land problems, the Lansing Motorcycle Club has their act together and is able to put on a fine event.

Brian,
It was a excenent event! The trail layout was awsome, the club did a fabulus job.
It was one of the funnest events I have ever rode.
Peronally I didn't have a very good ride, got stuck in a mud hole in a transfer section that cost me alot of time, after gas I got back on time and had a great ride. Boy am I sore today. I was great seeing all of the DRN'ers again and everyone taking home the hardware.

The Pine Cone was great, Mike & crew did an excellent job. The rain held off. It was different this year for me as I decided not to work a check & just hang out at the clubgrounds. I was amazed at the number of people the asked me if I was running a check this year. I guess we really are appeciated. I will be helping out next year, I really missed it!

Stay safe!

My bike is sore...he's got a broken front fender & shroud.

The JP layout was excellent & well marked!, I couldn't have missed an arrow all day if I wanted too!!!... I just loved all that new tight stuff. Thanks LMC for a top shelf event and awards too!

The PineCone trail this year I thought was a lot easier than last years, and a lot more fun. Like Ted said, he rode with us, and really ended up helping me out a lot. (Thanks, Ted! I didn't get to talk to you before you left) I ended up dropping 21 points, and got 2nd place in my class... Which was good compared to last years 66 points. =)

I've also decided that next year I am filling my gas tank MYSELF, just to make sure it gets done, and I don't end up with an extra 12 points. Thanks, dad. :nener:

Also, my dad brightened up the weekend with his sweet new head gear.

An OUTSTANDING weekend of Enduro Racing!

Brian

As the others already said: What an OUTSTANDING weekend this was! PERFECT weather for racing - rain just before hand, cool temps. YEEHAW !!! I hope you can at least enjoy it all vicariously through our posts here.

And the best part - my son Mark got 1st place in his class in the Pinecone! AND this slow old fart finally trophied in the Jackpine with a 6th place finish! My friend BJ rode his first enduro and did the Pinecone. I think he learned tons - had some serious competition in his class and got a 16th.

I do need to thank my Ace Gas Crew - my boys Mark and Mitch, and my wife Sheila. They do an outstanding job running gas. You can pull into the stop, and in a flash, someone is cleaning your goggles, filling your tank, offering you food or water etc. Of everyone they gassed for in the Jackpine, ALL trophied - SmitDog, TeamFrog and myself, and in the Pinecone, Sheila and Mitch ran gas for Mark, BJ and myself - with Mark and BJ doing super to!

Saturdays race went just super for Mark. Actually had quite a bit of event trail - some pretty nice trail actually - but with fewer whoops and sand in many respects it made it easier. One section up in this rather hilly area got ALL of the points that Mark dropped due to his pace falling off a bit. We did some for real enduro trail - virgin event trail - tight woods. Some logged out areas with logs and branches down, some ORV trail (not much actually). I was quite impressed with Mark's riding. Several times in some of the harder sections, I would look back, expecting him to be way behind - Nope he would be right up with me! Mark dropped a total of 11 points - of those 11, 4 were totally my fault due to timekeeping screw ups.

My buddy BJ rode on our minute as well. BJ is also a serviceman- full time out at the ANG base in Alpena - does something on the flight line - not exactly sure what. He is quite an inspiration as well. BJ has some major trouble with his back and legs due to back surgery to remove some spinal cancer just over a year ago. He does not let it slow him down one bit! I never thought about it before the race - but he cant get off and on a bike without it leaning up on something - fortunately he explained it to the crossing guards at the road crossings - and they let him ride across the roads. He sure seemed to have a blast (though he did say the pace was a bit slow at times) BJ got 16th in his class (16 to 65, 200cc or larger). which had like 40 riders in it. Not a bad showing at all! I think we may have hooked this guy on enduros now!

The Jackpine went great for me to. The first section was all on the LMC clubgrounds - early on it was rather confusing as the trail zigged back and forth across old trail used in the past. I got messed up twice due to some downed arrows or something, actually rode one small section TWICE! :bang: (I sure got some odd looks from some spectators the second time through!) I dropped quite a few points in that first section. From there we went off the club grounds. The scored sections were some real nice trail to - most of it really tight woods - the barkbusters went to good use. After the sections they had some pretty reasonable resets combined with fast connector trail to get you back on time.

I messed up coming out of the first gas - left a bit late by accident (I had plenty of time there - no excuses on my part! :pissed: ), so went into the section a minute or two late. Then later on, I screwed up AGAIN :coocoo: with time keeping - came out of a reset into a long section of connector trail. At one point I thought I was 3 or 4 minutes hot, and worried I would burn a check in. So I slowed way down (while SmitDog kept cruising). I then later realized I was 4 minutes LATE! By the time I got to the check in of the next section I almost made up the time, checking in 1 minute late (by a matter of seconds).

After the second gas we hit this one LONG section (thanks Fred!). I really got tired out in there. In the second half of that section my (already slow) pace got even slower - a bit of leg cramps setting in, and simply exhausted! Again, a lot of points down for me here.

One section after the first gas had some mess up- dont quite understand what happened - As we came into it, we came up to and emergency check flag - on the other side of some orange saftey fence. I assumed this was our check in. But the trail did not take us up to it! I then thought that maybe it was not our check in, but that perhaps the check out coincidently routed back that close to where we came in. (hence the fence in between where we came in and the flag) When we got to the check out - not at that location - we were told they were throwing that check away!

The DRN C Senior crew did great! SmitDog got first in C Senior, TeamFrog took 4th, Trevor Medley got 5th, and I got 6th.

I will post some pics my wife got later on. Oh - Fred - I loved that Helmet...made ya kinda look like uh...a special needs sorta kid.... :nener:

A couple Pinecone Pics

Ok - here are the first couple of pics.

The first one is of our row 20 - left to right, dunno the guys name - he was on a KTM 250RFS - sure seemed to have fun. Then BJ on his 525, me on my 250, and my son Mark on his KDX.

Next up is a shot of SmitDog's row. He had a buddy of his and his son with them (Andy and Alex.). From what I understand, this was only the 3rd ride they had went on! Left to right, Alex, Zach SmitDog and Andy.

(boy, I am glad I took today off work - that way I can mess around with these pics....)

Edit...oops. those pics posted in the wrong order...first one is of SmitDogs row, then the row Mark, BJ and I was on)

Dynamic Trail Arrowing...Fatherandson Style

Ok, while there may have been some arrows that got knocked down and got me confused - I sure cant say it was because of a lack of effort on LMC's part! In this first shot you can see how Fatherandson (literally!) tried to make sure people stayed on course! While i think the ribbon was up when I took off, evidently some of the course marking ribbon got knocked down at that first left turn after the start. So Mike Sr. and Jr. stepped in to help out!

Next shot you can see Young Ted convincing Davie he had better not mess up with that clutch issue any more!

Team Frog pics...

Ok - two more pics then I gotta go out and wash my bike...I will post some more this evening.

Here we have one of Teamfrog in the first corner. Evidently someone pointed him the right way! Was hard to get good pics in the woods there - not much light!

In the other pic Teamfrog is appearing a bit worried about something! Actually, he wasnt - my wife just has a knack for snapping pics at moments that make you look like this! We were all gathered around his bike inspecting some damage to his radiator and shrouds. Bill and I were due to leave right then, so we did not stick around to help him out (sorry Jeff - evidently things worked out OK!)

My Pine Cone experience:

I thought it was an excellent run this year. Plenty of tight stuff, but never really too hard. The hill that Ted mentioned earlier was a pain in the butt. When I got up to it there were 4 or 5 riders stuck on it, so I stopped to look for a line to go up. Unfortunately it was all loamy and I ended up having a difficult time getting any momentum going up the hill and ended up stalling. The short legs I inherited from my father didn't help me at all during this time. :ahhh: I entered that section 5 minutes hot and ended up coming out 4 minutes late. :bang: It was an awesome section other than that. My favorite part was the section where they had logged a bunch of pine trees, so there were slippery limbs and sticks strewn every which way...and I missed zeroing that section by 18 seconds... :moon:

I came in 3rd in my class to tie for 2nd in the series, only being dropped to 3rd because the guy I was tied with beat me in the Pine Cone. A girl won my class, and when I went up to get my trophy and shake Lafferty's hand, he said "You got beat by a girl man!" :rotfl:

"That's OK, she's faster than me."

Thanks to KTM Mike's family

KTM MIke - sent you an e-mail to direct to Sheila thanking her and Mitch for the great help serving as our pit crew for the Pine Cone on Saturday. Being that it was our first time, Sheila helped us out immensely. We had an outstanding time and will surely be doing future Pine Cones. When I move on from my Yamaha TTR 250 to a nicer bike (like KTM), I may even consider a Jack Pine down the road.

Hello,
I just joined this forum. I'm Cody Dusendang

The Jack Pine was a great race and an enjoying ride to be in. I had a great time except for the first section. I made some poor line choices but thats about it. I would have probably been in more trouble if i went trough the big mud section on the connector. When i saw an AA rider having a little bit of trouble and some riders were stuck in the mud. So I diverted into the woods left and clear of all mud and connected onto the trail agian. The track conditions were better than the recent races in Marquette (dusty) and Roselawn (muddy). The ground was tacky and moist.

Last few pics

GregB - you are quite welcome! I am glad Sheila could help you guys out! (did we catch another sucke... oops...future enduro racer here?)

Next pic is of SmitDog and Zach at the second gas. Zach was quite a help at the gas stops as well. (plus he got to mess around playing cards etc. with Mark and Mitch while waiting..and waiting...for us!)

And here is one of Mark and Mitch with me at the gas. My Ace Gas Crew!

Here's how the Badger family's weekend went.

Saturday's race I was on row 9 with Maurer Sr. while my mom and sister were on 37 or something like that. The trail was awesome and would definetely get my vote as the best Pine Cone so far. My mom and sister thought otherwise. Mom even went so far as to name the big nasty uphill as the "Hunt's Hill from Hell," because apparentely, the two Hunt brothers were at the top helping people up it. I thought it was a blast

Sunday we watch Lafferty blow the pants off the other racers at the beginning and then went to work a road crossing. My dad went with Napper and a couple of other guys to pre-ride the really nasty section that had Mike Maurer's check in it. And after my road duties were done, I got to ride it myself. It was probably the sweetest 13 miles of trail I've ridden :aj:. I just couldn't imagine what the guys with the big-bore four-strokes went through during that section. I came up with the idea of making "Tear-off riding shorts" for the guys on the big bikes so you can wear like 5 pairs and when you get to an ugly section, just tear off a pair, and you're good to go. It would have been perfect for that section.

Let me say first the you LMC members did a great job(far better than I had hoped as this was my first Jack Pine) of providing some very excellent race trail!!! My fear was that we would be spending alot more time on ORV trail than we did. For the land you have to work with, (compared to Marquette) I am not sure you could have done any better!!!
This was a very fun race for us from Ohio for a couple of reasons.
1. This was our first non-restart format enduro which provided a new element to deal with on the roads and 2 tracks. (Pure Fun!!!)
2. Awesomely tight, hard to find single track that tests your riding skills. (Fantastic!!!)

Here are a couple of questions I would like some help with from you Club members:

1. Why did they throw a check out? (I heard the people at the check got flustered and quit)
2. What did they separate the A/B's from the C's in the last section? The trail was very easy and fast. The A/B trail was approx. 3.5 miles after riding a 100. The C guys had to ride the same approx. 100 then 1.5 after the split that wasnt scored if I understood the route sheet correctly. I did not see the logic in this. It would seem they could race another 2 miles. If I am correct that they were not scored after the last restart, why did they have to wait to restart for a section they were not scored?

I am just curious and still learning all the in's and out's of enduros so I apologize if my questions are stupid!

I made a painful decision to were blue tinted goggles at the start of the race which caused me not to be able to see for crap in those first 4 miles on the club grounds. I rode terrible and kept missing my lines. Sorry to Mike Maurer for missing the first freakin' turn to the left out of the gate causing me to drive right thru the yellow tape that had been strung up on the trees in the first turn.
Here is what I remember hearing:
Mike M.: (pointing to left) "Turn left, Turn left."
Me: Now turning a little left and heading for the yellow tape because I had no depth perception with my blue tint goggles on.
Mike M.: (Arms flailing to the left)"Furthur left, Further left."
Me: Too late and driving thru tape tearing it down.
Me: "Sorry bout that!"

It was a great day of riding!!!

Answers to your questions;
1. ck thrown out because there were 20 riders at once at that "E" check and the crew got overwhelmed and couldn't score them correctly. So it had to be thrown out.
2. We figured that after that last 13 mile section before the last restart collectively with the other sections would take a toll on the "C" riders plus that last section of trail has been used before and we didn't want to put any more bikes on it than we had to, it is part of a longer section that is used.
3. The results for the Jack pine will be posted on our web site but I'm not sure when.

A big thank you to LMC and all of the volunteers that make an event like the Jack Pine happen. The Jack Pine was the most fun event I have done this year. Congratulations to Smit Dog, Team Frog and KTM Mike for the fine results. I found the trail to be challenging but not overwehlming; the conditions were perfect. The thing I was most stoked about all day, I zeroed a check (the only one where I could have come in hot) with nothing more than a watch and roll chart. All in all a great day, looking forward to the next enduro.

Detroit Free Press Article on the Jackpine

I found their lead in to this article great! Kinda cool to see Ted's name right there with Lafferty, Luca and Edmondson! Keep on going Ted!

Headline:Age doesn't stop biker

At an age when most men are happy to get around a golf course in an electric cart, Ted del Solar strapped on protective boots and body armor Sunday to join 247 other riders for the 100-mile Jack Pine Enduro motorcycle race through the woods of the northern Lower Peninsula.

Del Solar, 77, of Westmont, Ill., continues to race dirt bikes despite crashes in which he broke two ribs in 2000 and a rib and collarbone last year. His wife, Connie, said that after his latest crash, "He called and said, 'I'm staying over. I'm not coming home until tomorrow.' I said, 'How bad are you hurt?' Because that's the only time he doesn't come right home."

The winner of the 80th annual Jack Pine Cow Bell Trophy, which ties with a race in Europe as the longest-running motorcycle event, was six-time national enduro champion Mike Lafferty, 29, of Meadowbrook, N.J. Lafferty finished the course with 30 penalty points.

Scott Luca of Kalkaska was second with 34, and Stephen Edmundson of Augusta, S.C., was third at 35. Del Solar finished tenth in the masters class.

The race was like a car rally, with riders required to hit check points at specified times. But average speeds were set so high that the riders had to go as fast as possible on the twisting, single-track trails.

KTM MIke - Yes, maybe a future Enduro Rider (or two) is born. Still recovering from a separated shoulder from riding back in early summer, so that has slowed down my ambitions a bit. The boys can't stop talking about how much fin they had at the Pine Cone.

Thanks for all of the positive comments. This feedback makes all of the work worthwhile. We are already planning Pine Cone/Jack Pine 2006...it will be shorter (not a National), but hopefully just as technical.
Fred has already responded to the reasoning on the last three mile section. At the riders meeting I tried to make it clear that the riders in the following classes - C, Masters, Super Senior and Women's would not be scored, but they had the option to ride it anyways. I am aware of only two people who rode it, but did not have to...I think the first 87 ground miles was enough for most in these classes.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in Upland!

The riders from Cadillac want to give LMC an A+ for the best Jack Pine we can remember. (Just what a National should be, challenging) Work got in the way at the last two events for me, but this years Jack Pine made up for it. My body needs a few days off! I made good choices most of the day, but could not keep up the pace at the end. Congrats to to my Senior B racing buddies and the rest of the DRN gang for bringing home the hardware. Hope to see you all at Upland.

My 2 cents:
I only rode the Pine Cone with my 11 yr.old, but I would like to thank everyone in the LMC for putting on a superior event!
I don't think most people understand the amoumt of time and energy it takes to pull off an event like this. SUPER job folks!!
Great people+Great trial+Great weather=Great Day!
Let's all knock off work tomorrow and do it all again!
Thanks again RUZZ
