that ground tang thing has me completely baffled. I was ready to post a reply saying what a bunch of hooey it was, a good sales pitch until you mentioned that it actually happened on a real bike...

how? that thing is spot welded on there. I could buy that it happened due to poor quality control, but certain bikes reaching a critical frequency???

hmmmmm....

I'm only guessing at the "Critical frequency" idea; I can't think of anything else. It would seem that, IF, this was the problem, a little simple beefier ground tang would be the cure. I think if we do a search, there is quite a few threads about the pricey Zuke plugs.

I ordered one from my dealer, today. He'll be ordering it from White Brothers. I'll let you know when/if it shows up.

I ordered the '01 RM125 SDG seat for my 250 and my dealer said it was on the way. He talked to the distributer and they had just shipped it out. I'm not sure who they go through.

Cool, it's good to hear they're on the way! Give me a report on what you think, but no need to hurry- it snowed a foot this week, and the bikes are pretty much parked until spring. :ugg:

I'm now running MX2T and dropped the needle to the second clip position. Much better. Still think I need the 25 pilot, which is on order. I'll probably try dropping the needle to the first clip position, just for kicks. The main might be a little rich. Still getting a little spooge.

Stay tuned.

I had a ground strap break of my 01 Cr125 and it caused alot of damage.IMO the cheaper plugs are ok to use as long as you replace them more often. If you get the BR9/8EG both of which will work depending on use IMO-9 for heavy mx work 8 for woods, and replaced it after 10 rides i doubt you will see a problem. The ground strap breaking off is due to some riders holding it in a certain part of the powerband for a large amount of time(high revs, heavy load)its sets up a resonance with the plug-i dont think many will see this.

Thanks Marcus and everyone for your thoughts. They are much appreciated.

Correction: My bike actually did come with a 460 main jet, not a 450 as I previously stated. I read it wrong. :o The old eyes aint what they used to be. The other stock jetting is also as advertised.

I picked up my SDG seat last night and it looks pretty good. It is much tackier than the stock seat and it should help keep me on the bike better but I won’t be trying it until spring. The quality is very good and the base is as stiff as the stocker. It feels like it may be slightly heavier (not enough to make a difference to me) but I didn’t have a scale handy to verify it. The weight difference is probably due to the gripper seat cover. It also looks slightly narrower at the top of the foam and it’s not rounded off as much. I’m sure the sewn seam in the cover has something to do with that but narrower isn’t a bad thing.

I had ordered the ’01 RM125 seat for my ’01 RM250 because it is taller. Well, the OEM seat may be taller but the SDG seat is the same for the 125 and 250. Both bikes are listed on the label. My dealer was so helpful. He knew I wanted the 125 seat because it was taller but failed to tell me that it was the same seat for both bikes. I compared it to my stock seat and it’s the exact same size. Oh well, at least I have a nice gripper seat with closed cell foam. I never had any problems with the shorter seat but thought I’d give the taller one a try since I wanted the gripper one anyway.

RM Guy,

That's interesting that the SDG seat is the same height as the stock 01 RM250. The SDG guys had told me, a year ago this Oct, that they knew the preference would be towards the 125 height, and they were going to build the seats in the taller height. On the positive side, you will find that the stock seat is likely shot and simply getting new foam will boost the seat height a substantial amount. In fact, even the stock 125 foam flabs out and lets you feel the frame rails on good hits.

Thanks for the report. It looks like the kid is going to accept rider support from Factory Effex, so we'll be running the FE tacky seat cover and foam. I'll give a report when we get it.

Meanwhile, I see where the new 02 RM's have the same seat mount sharpness problem as the 01's. Grrrr.... Get out the file and take care of the trouble. The airbox needs a couple more rivets, too. I'll try to find the Dirt Bike issue which describes the fix and post it for the troops.

Hey MNKDXer, did you do anything with the '01 ignition or leave it in the airbox. I wonder if the guy that thought that up still has a job?

A-man,
I left mine in the airbox. It's a sucky location, and it would seem that being by a greasey air filter isn't the hot ticket, but it's still there for 02. Oh well, on the previous years, it was on the steering head and made installing a WER damper a minor PITA.
