As title, have a friend going to look at one for me now, but the previous bike came up as a 97 engine when it was supposed to be a 2001 YZ

Is there a way of telling the model year on this RM?

The serial number for the frame is usually stamped on the right side of the steering post. Turn the front wheel to the left to see it easier. I don't know about the engine number but i would think it is in plain view somewhere. Just look around on the engine and you should find it. The numerals will be stamped on one of the crankcase halves so don't confuse a number that was cast into the engine with one that was stamped into it.

Someone should pin this info, as it gets asked at least twice a week!

Engine number should be stamped on the case, facing up on a flat surface usually behind the kick starter area. And yes, it does get asked alot, a pin job is in order!

I know in 98 Suzuki had an issue with footpeg mounts breaking off. Our 98 was raced in ArenaX for a season by a local guy I know. The frame had been replaced under recall (twice). The VIN on our 98 has been hand-done. If just in case you can't find the # on the steering head, perhaps the 99's had this issue too...?
