Ricky Carmichael is not going to the Motocross des Nations

The following is an open letter from Ricky Carmichael:

I am writing to try to hopefully clear up some of the questions and speculation regarding the Motocross des Nations. I have learned that the best way to do this is by writing an open letter to the fans.

At the beginning of the Outdoor National Series there was talk of the US sending a Dream Team to represent our country at the Motocross des Nations. The team is normally selected by inviting the best riders in the 250 and 125 classes. Last year the format was a little strange because there was no 125 class but the promoters decided to return to the original format for 2004. I was fortunate to be on a very short list of riders to be selected with Kevin Windham and James Stewart. Kevin is coming off of a hard fought second over all in the SX season to Chad Reed on top of a great summer last year with a solid second over all in the outdoor national series. Bubba is totally dominating his class and is a threat to anyone on any track.

The selection and the participation of Team USA for the Motocross des Nations has always been a tough proposition for everyone and it isn’t getting any easier. The race is held on the other side of the world at a very difficult time for riders based on the AMA circuit, especially since everyone is just coming off of a 28-race season that is almost twice as long as the season is in Europe. Obviously I wasn’t able to compete in the SX season this year but the other selected riders will have just completed a very long season.


I have always been proud to step up and ride for my country when asked. In fact, I believe six years in a row matches the record for Team USA appearances, if we had actually gone all six times. But I have raced four times – in England, Brazil, France and Belgium — and been fortunate enough to be on one winning team. (We didn’t go in 2001 after the terrorist attacks, and the 2002 race in California was canceled at the last minute.

This year, the decision of whether to go or not has been made particularly difficult for me. As many of you know, I am switching teams for 2005, going from the CRF450R Honda factory bike I have raced all summer long, to a Suzuki RM250, so I will be in sort of a limbo in September: With the last national being held at Glen Helen on September 12 and the MXDN just three weeks later, there is little time to make the transition from one brand to the other, to do adequate testing, and then to have the bike shipped from California across the ocean to Holland in time for the race. This would actually give me less than 2 weeks on a bike that I have never ridden.

My success in Motocross is based upon a very solid training and testing schedule. I do not feel like I would be at my best with less than three weeks of testing with my new team. I have committed 100% of my focus and dedication to team Honda in our quest for this outdoor National Championship and don’t feel that it would be fair to anyone to give less than my all.

My future team manager Roger DeCoster, who is probably the biggest fan of the MXDN, as well as the Team USA manager, believes that it would be virtually impossible for me to be ready for the race on a Suzuki. Besides, I’m not sure when I will even be released from my current Honda contract. For what it’s worth, I have never even ridden a Suzuki. When I signed my contract in the spring, I was injured.

What it all comes to is this: I feel that I need to make a decision now before the final selection is made and the invitations are prepared so that other people—fans, riders and supporters—will know that Team USA is sending the best and most prepared team possible. But looking down the road two months, I’m not sure where I’m even going to be as far as my transition from one team to another goes. So before everyone commits to the event and spends a bunch of money on plane tickets, vacations, team personnel or whatever, only to find out that I can’t pull it off, well, I just think it’s better to say now that I will not be able to compete in the race this time around and will open my spot on the team to a better prepared rider.

I hope that in the future that I will be able to race for Team USA again, and that I will be joined by the very best American riders out there. I know that the Motocross des Nations hold a special place in the hearts of many fans, including my own, and I am optimistic that a team that represents American motocross at its finest will come together very soon. Thanks for your continued support as I finish this outdoor season and as I begin my career at Suzuki and prepare to regain my Supercross title.

Can't argue with that . I heard Dowd was going- maybe we should go for an all -privateer team.

Lets see, sandy track, Dowd is a sand specialist - anybody got Bradshaws phone # ?

Seriously, who else can go besides Dowd- Hey how about Mcgrath ?

anyone else ? Maybe Kiedrowski ?

WOW, OKIE better hope that Mike Brown doesnt get lapped, otherwise it could get really embarassing!!!!!

and before everyone starts with the RC bashing, dont forget he was the only one that gave your team any credability last year.

I think RC is 100% right- he is probably the ONLY one with a legitimate reason not to go- gee maybe Stewart will step up now.

Funny, RC states his reason for not going, it's good with everyone. New bike, etc. Makes sense.
JBS is moving to a new class, where a lot of you said he'll need a lot of practice to handle the big bike, also needs time for testing and he's crap?

I'm not cool with it. It sucks. The thing I don't get is why doesn't he just ride the Honda? Last week the talk was RC was trying to get out of his Honda contract early so he could test the Zook. Just ride the 450, it runs on pump gas, he knows how to ride it, there is no need to test.

I can understand RC's reasoning but lets get real, he would still be very competetive on a bike he's never ridden. Hell I'm sure he'd be competitive on a moped!

I'm sure RC is not worried about being competitive but more about ending up on his head on an unfamiliar bike riding at the speeds he does. While there is some similarity to RC and JBS situations I still think Bubba's is a somewhat weak excuse, RC has never ridden a zook while Bubba has already put mucho time on a KX250.

Not sure - I tend to think that RC has a good reason for not going, and bibba doesn't - maybe one just explains his position better than the other but I have nevergotten the feeling that James understands the signifigance of the Motocross des Nations or that he cares to represent his country- he may be feeling these things but they are not being communicated, or if they have I have missed it.

I would like to see Macgrath go- he was at a hillclimb that i saw on television and he got 2nd at a national event- he still is very competitive off road and might surprise some poeple- if he has kept his training up he would have no trouble bankrolling a visit to Europe- also a way for Honda to have another high profile rider there in the absence of carmicheal

By teh eay if you thought Ricky was fast on a honda, i say hold on to your hats because the Suzukis are really going to mesh with his riding style- things are going to be loose, ugly and fast

"He'll get spanked on the big bike", "He'll have a hard time adjusting to the big bike", "the big guys will push him around", "he'll crash his brains-out", etc., etc. OR "He'll win it all", "he's faster than RC" , "he's the best ever".

No pressure, he doesn't need any time to test the new bike for the big show, just jump on and win. If he goes to MXdN, we'll expect him to at least finish second to RC, his first time out. No pressure. RC doesn't want to go and lose on a new bike, bad for him, bad for Suzuki. But it's okay in his case. (I agree BTW).

So the kid is moving up to the biggest challenge of his professional life, from a stock KX 250 that he's ridden (how much time do you think he's got to play ride?), to dialing in a works 250 for a season (and new career basically) that starts right after the MXdN ?

The responsibility people want to put on this 19 year-old so early in his career is amazing. Just because the kid is fast, doesn't mean he can handle the pressure to be everything for everyone and live up to the demands the fans have put on him. Seems to me the pressure to win in the 250's right out of the box is enough. But hey, WE want to decide what's best for his career for OUR viewing pleasure.

If he's still among the best next year and get's an invitation to represent and doesn't? Different story. In the meantime, we'll write him off as a traitor.

Bubba would not have to ride a big bike. This year's format includes a 125 class.

As mentioned in the letter, RC has been on our team for six straight years. His first full season as a pro was '97, so basically he's been on our team every year since he went pro. Bubba is finishing his third pro season with zero MXdN appearances.

I thought come hell or highwater, RC would be there in '04. I understand his reasoning, but it would be great if Honda and Suzuki could work something out - either let RC start testing his Suzi early, or let him ride a Honda for this event.

IMO, the Las Vegas SX is partly to blame, as that has become the date when everyone debut's their new ride. If contracts ran through the LVSX and the new teams debuted with the first SX of the '05 season, nobody would need to test with their new teams just before the MXdN.

If Brown and Dowd are in, that only leaves one spot.

I say let Jeff Dement ride! He is campaigning in Europe, and I'll bet he would consider it an honor to represent his country. In the past, letting an American GP rider compete has paid off (Billy Liles helped us win one year).

Others to consider are Ferry and Ryno. Hughes for his euro experience, and Ferry would probably be motivated after getting banged up and having a poor showing at the MXdN last year.

Of course RC, JBS and KW are our best riders, but oh well, what can you do?

I think Bubba could cut competitive lap times on the 125 - I would have no expectations of him to do anything other than do what he has been doing all year - maybe he would have a disadvantage on power especially on a sand track but all 125's would have that same challenge- and bubba rides a different track than veryone else anyway - his is shorter.

maybe the euro style tracks don't provide the opportunities for scrubbing that ours do.

But i don't consider him a traitor or anything like that- if he doesn't want to go thats fne with me.

he has a long career ahead of him and can go anytime he wants.

Issue now is to put the best team together - a "coalition of the willing":

Dowd is a good choice, I hear that pastrana wants to go (conditioning may be an issue) we need someone on a 450 4 stroke now-
