I have a 1985 with a drum rear brake. The prior owner jazzed it up by welding the actuator arm to the cam-pivot. There is not a good seal around the pivot and it does not operate smoothly.
My dilema is that I have an older spare rear wheel. The older wheel has a larger diameter drum. Would I be better off replacing the whole rear wheel or should I try to improve the orignal rear brake. I have not seen a spare rear brake backing plate of this size in over 8 months of watching eBay. Perhaps I could get a brake plate from Fredette. The main problem with the spare rear wheel is that the backing plate requires a stay arm to be attached to the frame somewhere. I can probably make that work.

Can someone tell me that the smaller drum on the 85 had the same stopping power as the larger diameter drum on the prior models? Are there aftermarket brake shoes that would help the stopping power?
