I want to rebuild my front forks myself. I'm gonna order the right springs+shims and specs. But I wanna install everything myself. At the moment my forks are way to harsch. So I wanted to check if there are any shims. But I don't know how to remove the damper rod. I've searched everything here but I cant find the answer. Who can explain it to me? Do I first have to remove the basevalve? And how is the damper rod installed?

You could build a cartridge holder from PVC per this site-

I've made one up, and it works well (and it's real cheap).

Some just use an air wrench to spin the base valve out, so they have no need for the cartridge holder.

As for replacing fork seals, next time I'll spend a few bucks for a genuine fork seal driver, because it's tough to find an exact match with PVC.

I haven't played with shims yet, so I have no useful information regarding that. ;)
