My bike has a hot rods kit in it. How do I know when the rod needs replaced? Or is that usually just a big and small end bearing replacement?

Any up and down movement of the big end bearing means the bearing is shot. The small end bearing should be replaced everytime you change rings. The crank main bearings will usually last about as long as the big end bearing, but checking for play at the crank ends and looking for any sign of roughness as the crank turns will also tell you when they are worn.

Thanks Rich - so apparently the rod is not really a breakage problem for often. I wouldn't have thought so, but thought I'd ask.
