Reno Ride information

For those of you who have never been and are thinking about joining us this year, here are some details about this ride so you don't have to hunt around in threads past to get info. :)

Reno Ride dates: Feb 17th-20th 2005

History: Originated in 2001 by some of DRN's female members as the Ladies Valentine’s Day ride but everyone is welcome. The ride has pretty much evolved into the annual “Reno Ride”. This will be the 5th annual Reno ride!

Attendees: usually between 60-85 people (riders and non riders) . 2004 – aprox. 106!

Riding location: Moonrocks (off Winnemuca Ranch Road. NE of Reno on the way to Pyramid Lake, aprox 20 miles from the Peppermill).
Strick (Reno local and event organizer extraordinaire) usually provides maps with directions to the riding area and directions to the nearest hospital.

Elevation range: 4,200-6,800 (Most riders won't be riding any higher than say 5000')

Temperature range: 45-65 (some snowy patches at higher elevations)

Type of riding/Terrain: Varied. Desert riding, sandy/soil, sandy areas, rocky areas mountainous at higher elevations, hill climbs, washes, ravines, whoops, switchbacks, minor drop offs, small jumps, fire roads, single track, and several natural terrain MX tracks. This is something for everyone, ALL skill levels.
There is sometimes a couple of marked courses to follow and lots of little groups go out several times a day, usually depending on ability. “Beginner” group rides, “Intermediate” group rides, “Advanced” group rides and of course the “Glutton for Punishment” group rides usually led by Strick, Kiwi or Karl. ;)

Bike storage: Strick's large garage and secondary warehouse location (arrive in Reno, drop off bike(s) at one of these locations, check in at hotel, pick up bike(s) at either location and caravan out to the riding location)

Local bike shop: Reno Motorsports

Amenities at Moonrocks: Porta potties arranged by Strick (participants donate funds and give to Strick to cover cost)

Lodging: the Peppermill, http://www.peppermillreno.com discount rates can be found here http://www.reno-hotels.net
A majority of the people that stay at the peppermill reserve rooms in the “motorlodge” or the Annex building out behind the main hotel because you can park right in front of your room which is convenient if you have your bike in the back of your truck or have a trailer.
Last year there were several people who chose to camp out at Moonrocks, mostly those who have campers (gets chilly!)

Post ride activities: In the years past we have had at least one large gathering for dinner/drinks at a location that can accommodate our large group (well almost).
The Mexican buffet has become and annual thing and sometimes there is a Pizza night and some get together for dinner at one of the nearby steakhouses.
And of course there is gambling at the casinos and the Peppermill’s Fireside Lounge. ;)

Items you should consider packing if riding in the high desert in February is new to you:
Thermals
Hand/foot warmers
Windbreaker
Riding jacket
Balaclava
Warmer or wind chill riding gloves
Glove liners or latex gloves under riding gloves work as a wind blocker lining
Thicker moto socks
Extra jets/needles for 2 stokes
GPS doesn’t hurt

Did I forget anything? Feel free to add any info to this thread so there is one place to get all your answers.

You guys are finally catching on.... There is a reason I bring at least 2 bikes whenever I tow my trailer anywhere:)

HEY, HEY, HEY!!!

I wanted the 'other' weekend.

You said any weekend, Mister!!! And I actually wanted the "other" weekend too, but the poll ended up 22 people for Pres weekend and only like 15 for V-Day weekend. Also, sounds like some people actually get a day off for Pres Day so the 3-day weekend was a benefit to some attendees.

And since some of us out-of-towners need to make travel arrangements and book flights and get in vacation requests - we needed to decide on a date! And it looks like Feb 17-20th was the most preferred. Can't always please everyone....

Yippie - a date! Thanks y'all!
I was looking online and comparing room rates - it looks like the direct link to Peppermill is cheaper (versus the "discount" site!). I could be wrong though b/c the Peppermill site doesn't list the Annex (that I could find), but the discount site does. Maybe I should just call... tee hee. Doesn't matter, can't book it till the 1st - PAY DAY!

I've always called them. Tell them you want a room in the "motor lodge" or the "annex". They are seperate buildings from the casino, but only a very short walk away. I think we split our room three ways last year and it cost each of us only $60-80 total for all three days. Hard to beat that price.

Will it ever stop? Just to set the record straight Julie was in charge of watching over Kiwi not I. Therfore she left Kiwi to roam the streets of reno on a cold winter night. She has been spanked and it will not happen again.

Man that sounds like fun. Hopefully we can get a crew of cajuns to come along. Anybody know what are decent rates to get a bike shipped out there? Course being I ride a ktm i will only need to bring one bike instead of 2.
