I was given an 81 honda cr80r the other day and managed to get it started. once started it quickly revs up real high. I use the kill switch to stop it, check it and try again. it does the same thing, so I twist the throttle and itll rev higher. the previous owner said the original carb died on him and the new one on there is aparently to big for it(keihin PE carb). when not running , fuel on, it floods out onto the filter? I was wondering if its the floats causing the high idle and flooding. or do I need the original carb for it? Id reall ylike to ride this bike, any help is very apreciated.

Sounds like you need to get the right carb on it first. You might be able to get it to run with a bigger carb but it will be all top end power on a bike that needs to be reved all the time anyway.

if it is reving up then it is running out of fuel/ running lean check to see that your fuel is flowing freely

These guys are describing a lean condition. Could be due to too small of a pilot jet, but if it ever did run right it now has developed the lean condition from; some kind of vacuum leak, a plugged idle circuit in the carb, it's fuel starving (plugged screen in gas tank, damaged/plugged fuel petcock, needle and seat assembly in carb plugged/sticking), or could be as simple as being on the edge of running out of gas in the tank. Is the idle screw set way too high? Is the throttle valve (slide) sticking/not fully closing? Did your fuel to oil ratio accidentally get doubled on this tank of fuel? Happy searching.
