Im 50 yrs old and need a hip replacement. I have been riding sense I was 13, and it's a big part of my life, I have had problems for the last 2 yrs and have been to 2 different doctors and every time I mention dirt bikes I get real nasty looks. Im a intermediate B rider and I love riding tight technical single track in Michigan. I use to go out and ride 20 to 60 miles in a day ride, but now it's hard to get even 15 miles in before it gets to painful to ride. Can anyone shed some light on riding after hip replacement? If anyone has had this done what is the limitations on riding or can you ride at all? I don't want to give it up , maybe I will have to take up dualsport riding but I really not ready to do that. As most of you would understand, dirt biking is my therapy and keeps me sane, with out it , it might be straight jacket time. Any information would be greatly appreciated. :bang:

Thanks Gimpy

I wish I knew of a member that could help you out with your question, but at the moment I am at a loss. Ol'89r maybe knows someone that has a had a hip replacement. He used to flat track and still knows a bunch of retired pros.

Although I am 54, I have been blessed with good hips and knees, knock on wood. I have broken the metatarsal bones in both feet over the years and I have a lump under my foot that makes my foot ache, but no hip problems thank goodness.

In any case, welcome to the site. We have a VERY active group of folks up your way. Perhaps they can help with answers as well. Check out the Michigan Trail Riders forum. There is a great bunch of guys hanging out in there.

Good luck on your quest for information. ;)

Hi Gimpy.

As a matter of fact I do know someone that had that done. He is a guy that I raced with for many years and he had a bad crash on the 1/2 mile that ended his pro career. He had his hip replaced a few years ago and he is back riding again.

He gets a little pain from his hip and his range of motion is slightly decreased but, he's back at it and currently setting up a flattracker to go ride Pikes Peak. We raced together at an invitational short track a while ago and I can tell you that his new hip hasn't slowed him down any.

I broke my hip at a 1/2 mile in Alta Iowa many years ago but, mine healed ok and has never given me any problems.

If I were you, I would go for it.
