"rim strap" do you need it?

The rubber band thing that goes around the wheel on top of the spoke nipples on my bike is ripped in a couple of places, I think I read somewhere that you can just scrap it and use a few wraps of duct tape. Any comments? Or do I just need to go and buy a new strap?

I just use duct tape...or electrical tape, if Im out of duct

Duct tape is fine and what most people use when the rubber band tears or loses its tension. You want to have something there to keep the base of the nipples from rubbing on tube.
