I just rebuilt my rm125 and its been bored up to a 144 but its having problems. It will start, idle and rev fine when it is in neutral, but when it is in gear it will only get up to around 20 miles per hour and it wont go any faster sputtering. I can hold the clutch in and it will rev fine only when i put a load on it.

When was the last time you replaced the clutch plates?

Was it a running 144 before the rebuild or did the 144 get install during the rebuild?

Check your choke circuit. I had a similar problem once and found that even though the choke knob looked like it was fully depressed and off, it wasn't and it was running rich like you describe. I pulled the choke plunger off the carb just to look at it (looked fine) and after reinstalling it the problem went away. I'm still not sure what happened but something must have sprung back in place when I took the plunger out.
