Saturday nite was Round 2, Saturday Nite Thunder, ASCOT MX. My route to the track was altered by the bridge collapse on I-40 near G o r e, OK on Memorial Day weedend. My brother decided to go with me and we made are way via western Arkansas. This is very scenic country so it was a nice change of pace.
We arrived at the track around 4:30pm with practice starting at 5:00. MX547 and MOTOX757 were already there and had our usual pit spot. We made are introductions and went to registration. It was warm and humid with a nice breeze. It looked as though there may be a small turnout but this changed as late arrivals made for quite a few motos.
As we geared up for practice we noticed they had switched the direction of the track and made several changes but it looked to be a good change. I started up the Mamba and an unusual sound was coming from the engine. Quick decision, call it off or ride till she blows. I had hoped to put off the bottom end rebuild until later in the summer but that was not to be. :ugg:
I took a couple of practice laps, a sight lap and a lap to check out the jumps at speed. The bike was running great but the noise was obvious. After contemplating the options, I decided to stay and ride. We ended up with six in our class. The first moto was around 10:30. I did all right, finished fourth but had my throttle stick open on the third lap over the biggest, fastest jump on the track. It stuck open a couple of other times but I was able to hold off the rider behind me to hold on to fourth.
Back in the pits I made some adjustments and corrected the throttle position. Our next moto would be in about 45 mins. I got a pretty good start I was fourth until the halfway around the 3rd lap. I spun out slightly on an off camber uphill and the bike behind be made the pass. I stayed with him around to the same spot on the white flag lap. I made a great move to pass and blocked his line, however, I spun again and he ducked behind me to pass me again. It was a sprint for two corners with a double in between, I pulled up at the finish line with the front wheel even with his pegs. A fifth place in the second moto with fifth overall on the nite. Not bad with an engine going south.
The next race is in two weeks, the motor is going to be redone, top to bottom. Hopefully, I will have a few evenings to get it broken in properly before round three.

it was an uneventful night for me. i went 2/2 for second overall. i stayed close to the leader both motos until the final lap when i was trying some different things (they didn't work) and started making mistakes. he and i were tied for the series points lead so that drops me to second. my daughter was the only women's open rider so she got an automatic win. she beat a couple of the boys in both motos and she was proud of it. she told me today that she wants to start taking lessons.

As craig_enid and I were headed from working at Stillwater Saturday to TrainRobbers Enduro near Hotsprings Arkansas. We came pretty close to Ascot. We discussed and laughed about skipping the enduro and running the mx. Wouldn't it been hilarious for mx547 to be sitting at the line ready to start and craig roll up on one side and me on the other, I could've said 'Hey Jay, were do you get your mylar" or better yet "Jay...I thought you were going to race an mx this weekend, what are you doing at an enduro." ;)

LOL, Justql just beat me to the post!! :D

Here's mine...

Glad everyone finished unhurt. JustQL and I took the same scenic route that you did on our way to Bismark. Beautiful country there, between Springdale and Ft. Smith. We were amazed at those big bridges that were built over the valleys, sure made travel faster.
As we were traveling through Ft. Smith, we had a serious discussion centered on skipping Trainrobbers, and hitting Ascot. We had it figured out so that when you guys were in the start gate for your first moto, a GasGas and a KDX would pull up on either side of you.
I think both of us were 51/49 for going on to the enduro. If either one of us would have said, "Let's do it!", the other would have gone along with it....
Maybe next time......

Opportunities like that are few and far between. IF it ever happens again, that I feel as unenthused about going 8 hours to a race and there is a chance to shock mx547 and bswift, I'll do it.

You guys should have done it. It could have been a Heartland Spode dominated field, as it was, we comprised half of the over 40 class.

It was an awesome evening and night. Perfect temperatures, the track stayed in good shape all night long... ...31 motos, break for a non-racer race, and then 18 more motos...

I was circulating around in 6th in the 40+... Just need a little more "something" and I will be competing for 5th! hahaha...

I was also surprised when I stopped by the tower when pulling out of the lot to check my finishes, got a plaque and I had to turn around and show mx547 and bswift... I was all giddy... LOL!

Looking forward to round 3 on June 22nd...
