As the engine looses compression it is unable to fully ignite and scavenge the air/fuel mixture entering the combustion chamber. As a result it runs rich and blows a lot of spooge.

Also, keep in mind that there are other factors that will make the bike appear to run rich such as a blown crank seal.

Obviously, if the bike was running well and it suddenly appears to be running rich, something has changed and needs to be repaired.

My thinking was that if the engine has less compression it would also create
less of a fuel signal therefore leaning the mixture. Is my thinking wrong?

As an engine gets tired it starts to run rich. It's on of the signs of the apocalypse for an engine.
