I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. I thought that tranny oil and engine oil were 2 different things  . Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe I'm thinking about tranny fluid... :bang: I'm still learning about my bike so I'm probably wrong.

On your bike, the engine oil also lubricates the transmission.

I'm with Motometal on this one.....

Why on Earth would you need to clean your filter every 5 hours, or even every ride? Isn't the real reason behind cleaning filters simply to yield better performance? A severely crudded-up filter can certainly restrict air flow, but I don't see how it could let any more dirt in than a clean filter?

I think the most important thing about cleaning filters is that they are oiled and sealed properly.

I think the bottom line is not to obsess about cleaning your filter too often, just do it on a regular basis. Everytime you take the filter off, you risk knocking dirt down into the airbox. Why do that more than necessary?

If you don't keep your filter clean, it can, and eventually will, literally fall apart at the seams. You should have seen the look on my salesman's face when I told him how long it had been since I cleaned my son's filter. He wasn't surprised when I came in 2 days later to buy a new one. I bought a stocker, and ordered a TwinAir. Now I do a much better job of maintaining my filters, but still not often enough, I hate doing it, and go through 2-3 pairs of latex gloves every time. My recommendation, buy a big box of them, they're cheap.

Not ever sales person is out to make a buck! i work in a bike shop and i hate to see people wast money on things that they don't have to with the right help. We're at that shop to help you out (well in most shops that is) and we do this because we love the sport. But anyways that guy was right the cleaner it is the healther your bike will be. Sucking in dirt, sand, or what ever isn't that great for your bike. Twin air dirt remover works muck better than any spay

you will need it very soon , and if it is his fault you are now aware that your air filter needs cleaning and oil you should go kiss his lips, in fact i would give a guess that a brand new bike from a dealership comes with no oil on the filter . so go do your dad a favor and oil it before you go crying for some money to rebore the cylinder due to the grit scrubbing the walls free of the nikasil plating.

parts counter guys are for the most part good guys who love the sport and do not work on commission
Most parts guys cannot walk & chew bubble gum. You must be the lucky one to have a good dealer near you.

My family owns a dealership in mecosta and that salesman wouldn't of sold you filter cleaner if you didn't need it. He won't see a penny of it. And a lot of people are impossible to talk out of a big bike. Try talking someone into buying a raptor 350 instead of a 700. its near impossible. As for parts guys, I take pride in our department. We have a guy that knows boats, a guy that is pretty good with ATVs and I know snowmobiles, motocross and accessories. It depends which guy you get

No question about it... the "standard" Yamaha manual is FAR better than Honda's.

The kawasaki manual is much better than yamaha's :nener: Seriously it is nicely organized compared to yamaha.

Salesman Bashing

Salesman bashing is a favorite past time for many. Those that beat up on saleman most likely don't know how to read or think independently or they wouldn't need the help of a salesman other than to get a price or a point blank question/answer session. The filter thing sounds like an experience issue, thus your best source for info and advice would be your manual, a seasoned mature rider, or an appropriate DRN forum.

Air filters are funny... it's not the dirt you see that hurts you, actually the dirt you see helps as it tightening the pores of the filter promoting cleaner air to the carb. Downside is this dirt will eventually restrict air flow... With a filter its the dirt you don't see, this dirt is what can blind the filter inside outwardly unknow to the eye and pass the inexpensive or non-tac filter and enter the carb... You own a bike and it sounds like your dad is paying the bills so the influence of infrequent filter and oil changes will be coverd by your sponsor at least for now.

Problem with TTR's and XR's is they're great technologies. The problem with good 4-stroker's like these is you can go virtually maintenace free if your riding slow trail, they can take the abuse of no maintenance for years, literally. This should not be confused with rider responsibility, service and upkeep... this post provided courtesy a filter salesman

Burn me.... guess that's why they call this a flame board. I'll try this again but a bit slower for you MI/KTM guy's.

Point, you ride a bike now and I can only assume your old enough to assume some responsibility. Obviously, in the original post it appears the fellow is somewhat new or inexperienced, which may be your case... someone else takes care of his ride thus his not realizing that the salesman may have done him a favor, which after he thought about it didn't happen as guy's like you have him convinced all salesmen are useless.

The salesman by the way won ( I know this will ruin your day), not only did he make big $$$'s selling the fellow something he obviously needed, he got him to think... the result was this post, and now the fellow has learned about air filters and their influence upon engine life cycle.

To make it worse... the flash cards we salesman use in Louisville KY are the 2007 Thor Girl issue... sell you a set at a discount, with the nice calender for a bit extra and their phone numbers for little more.
