Shifting techniques?

Hey everyone, where i live i have to ride about 3-5 miles to get to where i ride, it is mostly hilly straightaways, but there is one hill that is lond and steep, and i will most likely be doing this on a kx100 or Cr125, but my question is what gear should i use going up steep hills, and when i am on the straightaways, can i just keep it in 4th or 3rd gear, and just keep the throttle in one place? and if not what do i have to do, i know this is confusing, but could someone please tell me how....thanks, -Nick

Youre riding area sounds like mine (powerlines). On the straightaways, I have the throttle wfo for several seconds, then almost closed, then open again. That's in fifth gear on my cr125. I can't help you with the hills
