should i look into a brace?

well im 17, im new to riding and im getting a bike really soon and im wondering, should i look into getting one of the asterisk Cell braces? money isnt the issue, i just want my knees to be protected when i crash, or would u guys reccommend another one?

i am happy with the cells,they do restrict your movement a bit but you get used to it,there have been a few threads on here saying the cables and other bits need replacing often so if money is not an issue i am sure you could get something which needs less maintenance and is custom fitted,whatever you do get some knee protection before it happens rather than afterwards like i did .good luck

ya exacly, my dad and grandpa both have screwed up knees, i wanna protect them before i get hurt, one wrong crash could mes sup my leg for good

I am 7 weeks post ACL surgery and just screwed my knee up again after letting a wheelie get away from me. I will find out in a few days if I will need a second surgery. I think I will but time will tell. At the time of the second crash, I was wearing a Breg D-Rotation knee brace. I'm not sure if it helped or hurt. I know there are braces specifically designed for dirt riding, how effective are they and how expensive are they?

My son is 16 and has been wearing Asterisk for 4 years now and has not had a knee injury but several times has had potential for one. I have bad knees from football and skiing and do not want him walking like I do. I also didn't have them at DW 02 and ended up with reconstruction on the ACL, MCL and Lat as well as a small fracture of the femur right at the knee. No way I can prove the Cells would have prevented the injuries but truly believe they would have given me a far better chance of walking away.
I now also wear Cells and as I said my son will not even warm up his bike without his on.
My advice is once you have a good helmet, and boots if it is within your budget look at knee protection.

Thanks for the link. I'm going to do a little more research on them and then I will show it to my Ortho doctor. I wonder if my insurance will cover them.

Btw, my doctor is pretty cool. He rides four wheelers at Windrock.

GET BRACES... I don't care what brand but every rider should wear them. I have tested almost every brace out today except the EVS Web and the asterisk is hands down the best over the counter brace period.

hi theroyz71 - who is your ortho doc - i keep a few of them in oak ridge in business... :bang: let me know if you get the insurance to cover based on your doc's recommendation.

After spraining and tearing the cartilage and having to use crutches for a while I would recommend a knee brace. I have not yet met a man who has said they wish they wore less protective gear in an accident.

I'm about 4 weeks post ACL reconstruction and the doc told me not to ride for 5-6 months. You must have a better doc.

I'm wondering also if the Asterick will protect my ACL from re-injury when I return to riding or are there braces around that do better for ACL's. The web system doesn't seem that it would be secure enough. Also, what keeps the brace properly located on the knee? The Donjoy has a pad to position it on the tibia and keep it there; is the Asterick like that?

My Ortho doc is Dr. Christopher in Morristown. He's a good doc but he didn't tell me I could ride my dirtbike. I'm not even sure if he knew I had one. He was cool about it afterwards in that he didn't get mad at me for screwing up his work.
