I'm gearing up to start riding and have been trying on boots at a local shop. I noticed the socks they sell there are thick - really thick. Are thick socks better for riding? I tried on some Gaerne SG-10 boots, which was a mistake, since I had not planned on spending that much money. The 8's fit perfect with regular athletic socks, but I'll probably go with a 9 if the thick socks are best. Thanks in advance for your help.

Go with thick socks. The first time you bang your foot on something you'll regret it if you don't.

Sporting goods stores often will carry a specialized hunting sock. About the same thing as moto socks for far less coin.

I've found that having "moto socks" make the world go round when its cold and nasty or when the leg takes a nice hit.

Thick socks help if you are prone to blisters. Boots are getting more and more 'user friendly' but still some have a tendacy to rub in places.

I have Tech8's and use soccer socks that I bought from a sporting good store. Soccer socks are long and go slightly past the knee. I fold down the top to just below the knee and provides a double-thickness for my knee guard strap. The sock foot is about medium thickness. I really like them and I never had an issue with blisters, etc. The soccer socks are sold in multi-packs, so a few pair can be purchased for about $10. By the way, you can get any color you want black, blue, red, etc. if that is a concern.
