Well guys its time to break the cabin fever!!

I'm heading up to Prentice Cooper state park Tn. (WMA) to stir up some turkeys saturday, I think i'll stay away from the river crossings this time though, I already have an engine on the bench and the guy I'm going with has only been out riding once before.

Anyone else going to take advantage of near 60* and the sunny sky saturday?

Hoping to hit brushy. I got the bike fired up wednesday night. Something feels not quite right though. I'm off today so I'm gonna mess around with it.

The only changes are:
Wiseco piston,
replated cylinder,
new power valves.

The old cylinder was beyond clapped out, so I expected a huge difference. It certainly feels like it wants to be a lot stronger, and then it starts breaking up and seemed to be running hot. I'm thinking I had the jetting too rich previously since compression was on the lower end of spec. Probably considerably under spec by the time I took it down. I didn't bother checking before I ripped the old jug and piston out though.

well I'm not hitting prentice cooper ...luckly I check there site and most trails are closed during the winter months...

I'll head out to this new place in alabama called doc hilt's, i was going to go there on labor day weekend but the riding buddy refused so we went to broad river where I sank my kdx.

did you load up the engine really good during the ring seating (break in) like we were discusing on another thread?/

did you set you ring gap to specs?

I'm sure you can sort it out just throwing some thought out there

Yeah piston clearance and ring gap checked out good. I ended up dropping the needle down 2 notches and it's screaming pretty good again. The water pump impeller was slipping on the shaft too, hence the quick heatup.

I did run it pretty hard on break in, but not hammering on it or anything. It sure SOUNDS badass. It's all in the jetting at this point I think. If we head out to brushy I'll take some time in the AM to switch out a couple jets.

I been messin with this thing all morning and haven't figured it out. I thought dropping the needle helped, but apparently not much if at all. I switched out the plug and put fresh gas in just in case. It totally feels like it's misfiring, not really like a blubbery rich or hesitating lean condition. Think if the head gasket was leaking to the inside and the plug could be getting wet it might be missing a lot under load? I pulled it out and it was pretty dry, chocolately, and didn't smell of antifreeze.

I gotta give up for now, I got stuff to do for the wife tonight. Might not be riding tomorrow after all....

julien just a shot in the dark, you replaced the power valves did you put them back together right, in regards too, did you maybe reverse the reinstallation of the sub-valves?

No chance. I have had the power valves apart and back together in this bike so many times I'd almost consider myself a pro. The valves are perfect. I even second guessed myself and double checked. I almost wish it was that!

I can't imagine the jetting requirements being THAT far off after replacing the top end. I'm running 42 p and 155 mj. I've moved the needle over 4 different settings, and don't notice any difference except on the lean side of those settings I start getting a lean bog.

Sorry sr5, I have taken a perfectly good "yay i'm riding!" thread and destroyed it....

well I rode Doc Hilt's trails yesterday in Alabama, I had a good time and I felt great..the bike was very happy too

I played with the clickers front and rear (one change at a time) and ended up going in 2 more clicks on the front and after all the messing around witht the rear the rebound is back to what it was and compression only one click in when all was said and done.

so I found I was better off with rear traction over the smaller jumps in the trail than the provided lift of the rear tire from additional compression setting which also provide a rear end buck when I was off the throttle.

I also want to go back to a 50t rear sprocket I am at 13/48 now with the tall d803 trials tire and while that is fine normally, when I get tired and slow down a bit the step twisty hill climbs I find myself slipping the hell out of my clutch in stead of shifting down.

if my trail tech was reading right I was averaging 25mph anyhow.... riding was mainly between 15-and 36mph with some bursts up to 43mph an dthat was beyond my comfort zone with all them trees and errosion ruts smiling at me..

And today I am a bit sore but I'm glad the weathrer broke for the ride

could it be that the weather is the problem...it is colder out now and you really never said where the problem was at rpm wise?

Sounds like good fun! It was just plain nasty around here. I was halfway glad we didn't try to get out in it. Looks like we plan on Brushy next saturday.

I did take the bike over to my buddies garage where it was easier to work and more space to ride. I ended up starting from scratch with the jetting. I was at 155/45 on the old top end, and the fresh one has required me to go 150/42. Probably more in line with where I should be when everything is tight. My old cylinder was in a pretty bad way.

Anyway, with the new jets installed the bike is just plain screaming. I'm very pleased :). The sputter was apparent right off idle all the way to the top end. It's now smooth and strong pull all the way through. Very nice! It's good to hear your bike was running well also!

yeah mine has good pull, i swaped bike very briefly with my buddy (89 yz250) I thought I was going to die and swaped right back it, had super stiff suspension low handlebars high footpegs and enough power to make things real hairy, i dont know how he controls it! this is his second time out riding

on my rebuild: I still have the top end droped off at my wifes work and need a spring washer for the clutch then its time to brake in the blastard, then I will send the swing arm from the spare frame off for a plus 4" job and start hunting hydro brakes
